Taut Thriller With Some Surprises
wdavidreynolds1 February 2021
Luke Frazier is a former bounty hunter working under a different name as a ranch hand for a rancher named Chris Thornton near Buckland, Kansas. Thornton has discovered Frazier's true identity. He does not want Frazier working on his ranch, but he tells Frazier if he will hunt down a man named Otto Fry, he will give Frazier 1,000 acres of ranch land. Frazier had dreamed of owning a ranch, but never thought it was a possibility.

Frazier is not too keen on resuming his bounty hunter career, but the lure of the promise Thornton made is enough to make Frazier decide to take on the job. Frazier manages to justify his actions because Fry killed Thornton's son years earlier. Thornton produced a wanted poster for Otto Fry offering a $600 reward.

Frazier tracks Fry to Dodge City where he reacquaints himself with his old friend, Festus Haggen. Frazier soon learns Fry is living under the name Lon Jensen near Dodge with his wife and daughter. He also learns that Fry is not a wanted man. The younger Thornton's death was ruled justifiable homicide because Thornton raped Fry's wife. The wanted posters were printed by the sheriff in Buckland, but they were never distributed.

Frazier is furious that Chris Thornton set him up to murder Lon Jensen/Otto Fry. He returns to Thornton's ranch and begins delivering a beating to Thornton, but Thornton gets his hands on a rifle and shoots Frazier. Thornton and his men then set out for Dodge to murder Jensen.

This is a taut thriller with a few surprising twists. I have always found it interesting that bounty hunters are often portrayed in a negative light in television westerns with a few notable exceptions (Wanted: Dead or Alive, for example). Once Matt Dillon learns who Frazier is, he instantly distrusts him, although Frazier seems to be an honest, honorable man.

Robert Lansing possessed a distinctive acting style, and he is excellent in the Luke Frazier role. He was very memorable as the character Gary Seven in an episode of Star Trek titled "Assignment: Earth." The episode was a pilot for a spin-off series that was never developed.

This is Wright King's last of eight Gunsmoke appearances. King was a television veteran and appeared in many westerns. King plays Lon Jensen in this episode.

Paul Savage wrote this episode, as he would several other Gunsmoke episodes over the years. Savage was a prolific television writer. He contributed multiple scripts to other series including Laramie, 77 Sunset Strip, The Big Valley, The Streets of San Francisco, The Dukes of Hazzard, The Waltons, and Murder, She Wrote, but he wrote more episodes of Gunsmoke than any other series.

All Luke ever wanted was a piece of land to call his own.

Warning: Spoilers
Chris Thornton runs a ranch outside of Bucklin, Kansas and calls in one of his cowhands named Turner. Mr Thornton tells Turner that he knows his true identity as Luke Frazer a former bounty hunter. So Luke tells Thornton that he will be gone by sundown but Thornton has another deal for Luke. He shows Luke a wanted poster with the name of Otto Fry. Seems like Fry killed Thornton's son a few years ago and now if Luke will find and kill Otto Fry, Thornton will give him a thousand acres to live. So Luke sets out to find Fry.

The travels take him to Dodge where Otto Fry is living under the name of Lon Jenson a respectable man of the community. When Luke shows Matt a wanted poster with Lon's face on it, Matt goes out and talks with Lon. Lon explains that he killed Mr Thornton's son because he attacking his wife but since Thornton controls the town he knew they would hang him So that is why he ran and changed his name. Matt tells Lon he has to lock him up more for his protection since a bounty hunter is looking for him.

But when Marshal Dillon sends a telegraph to Bucklin Sheriff he finds out the charges has been dropped when the Thornton kid confessed on his death bed. So there was never a warrant issued. When Luke finds out he knows he has been set up. Now he rides back to Thornton's ranch to confront the man that send him to kill an innocent man.

I thought this episode was extremely well written. It contained a lot of action and suspense that kept you on the edge of your seat. A good watch for viewers.

Well-acted but too chock full of illogic

Warning: Spoilers
The story of a bounty hunter who is an old friend of Festus has some truly fine moments indeed--all of them involving the part time deputy marshall. But it also has weird moments like everybody (including good Festus) instantly refusing to identify the wanted man the bounty hunter is looking for. How out of luck can the bounty hunter be? Also, what possible purpose did it serve to have the badly wounded hunter go out and fight the people who formerly employed him when Matt and Festus could easily have handled the situation? More holes too elsewhere in plot.

Matt is disappointing

Warning: Spoilers
Most of this episode was awful do to bad story telling. A bounty is on a man yet when someone comes to collect the people spit on him more than they do the man wanted for murder. Including the Marshall who goes out of his way to make sure to protect a murderer from being found. It's one thing to go with the bounty hunter but its another thing to give no information on someone who was wanted.

Matt didn't know he was innocent until after the fact the post would have been enough for him to go out after him (which it was) but for some reason it wasn't enough for him to give information to the bounty hunter. Terrible character writing for Matt in this episode ruins it for me.

The good part of this episodes story is the one man that hired the bounty hunter using him to carry out an execution to a man who killed his son even tho his son raped someones wife. This part of the story is why I am not giving it a 1 star, however I can't get over how bad Matt Dillons character was in this story
