A Revealing Look at the Best and Worst of Humanity
wdavidreynolds6 October 2021
A powerful rancher named Bear Sanderson -- who is one of Matt Dillon's old friends -- and his wife Lavinia live near Dodge City. Bear is the epitome of the rugged individualist. He established his ranch by unapologetically driving out the indigenous people who lived there previously. Lavinia has grown tired of his stubborn independent nature and his hard drinking, womanizing ways.

Comanche renegades have been attacking homesteads throughout Kansas. After an intense argument that resulted in Bear leaving the ranch, a group of renegades attack the Sanderson house, kill Lavinia, and burn the house.

Sometime later, Newly O'Brien and a group of soldiers from Fort Dodge find a Comanche encampment. They discover Bear's gold watch and some of Lavinia's jewelry. The Comanches are arrested and taken back to Dodge to stand trial.

Bear demands custody of the Comanches so he can exact revenge for his wife's death. Matt tries to convince his old friend to allow justice to run its course, but Bear wants to act as judge, jury, and executioner. In a captivating, tense scene where Bear and the Marshal argue, Bear refuses to budge from his position, and Matt warns Bear he will be forced to kill him if he continues to try to take justice into his own hands.

Meanwhile, an attorney named Cicero Wolfe is traveling to a job in San Francisco. He finds himself stuck in Dodge for a time, because the Calvary has closed all roads into and out of Dodge while they try to quell the renegade uprising.

Marshal Dillon cannot find anyone to take the case of the men who were arrested, because of Sanderson's widespread influence. The Marshal approaches Wolfe about taking the case. At first, Wolfe refuses "for personal reasons," but after an appearance from Cora Sanderson - Bear and Lavinia's daughter - and some self-reflection, the attorney agrees to take the case.

One must believe when this story was being cast the Gunsmoke producers had to think Morgan Woodward was the obvious choice to play Bear Sanderson. The character is exactly the type of hard-nosed, stubborn man Woodward had played previously. Woodward appeared in eighteen different episodes of Gunsmoke, and he has never been tougher.

Paul Stevens returns for the final time in a Gunsmoke role with this two-part episode. He plays Cicero Wolfe in this story with same level of intensity and integrity he usually brought to the roles he played. Stevens suffered a stroke during the filming of the courtroom scenes in the second part of this episode. The stroke temporarily affected Stevens's ability to speak, and filming was delayed until he recovered enough to continue.

Donna Mills appears in her only Gunsmoke role as Cora Sanderson. This episode as produced early in the acting career of Mills.

Whitney Blake portrays Lavinia Sanderson, although the character only appears in one early scene. Blake was an acting veteran by this time. One of her more prominent roles was as the character Dorothy Baxter on the 1960s sitcom Hazel. She would later co-create the series One Day at a Time about a single mother raising two daughters. Blake said the premise was based on her own experiences as a single mother when she was younger. Actress Meredith Baxter is her daughter, and singer Whitney Houston was named after her.

Actor X Brands makes one of his seven Gunsmoke appearances. He plays one of the Comanche arrested for Mrs. Sanderson's murder.

As with most two-part episodes, Part One lays the foundation for the events in Part Two. It is tempting to speculate as to the direction of the story, but the second part is full of surprises.

Earns all the stars!

This is a rare two-part episode that well used every minute. The plot is complex, with multiple lines working their way to a satisfying conclusion. The opening scene is a man and a wife struggling to reconcile a long life together, with the inevitable tribulations, and parting due to a spate. It was intended by each to be but a temporary parting, to let things cool down, but ended up permanent due to tragic misfortune. That terrible event set the rest of the story into motion.

Ultimately, it is a narrative of integrity and duty, but surrounded by a humble admission of humanity. Several different people allow their prejudices to cloud their judgment, but are all essentially moral enough to listen to reason.

That essential goodness provided the means by which all of them to come to a better understanding, of themselves and others. There are no trite or preachy presentations -- instead just the acknowledgment of hard lives lived, filled with challenges, including a good bit of violent confrontation.

As the central guest star, Paul Stevens turned in a tour-de-force performance. He captured the center of attention and captivated the audience in such a manner, that we are surprised at the end just how powerful the effort really was. It was understated brilliance.

Gunsmoke endures as among the finest television series in history because it had the courage to dig deep into human psychology, and touch well the issues that face society. It resorted to no cheap theatrics, and no overly emotional appeals. Instead, it sought to bring people together through exposition of common human experiences, and bravely sought to establish elemental moral truths.

In seeking this, Gunsmoke created episodes such as this one, that stand well over many years, and provide valuable lessons we would all be wise to listen to.

If only television today could strive to reach as high!

A Test Of Fortitude And Determination!!
ellisel22 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The opening plot of "A Game Of Death ... An Act Of Love" had started with the Sanderson couple having their conversation at home. Bear Sanderson had been focusing on one thing only: his constant predisposition with cattle rustling and drinking. Lovinia Sanderson -- in contrast -- wanted more than discussions concerning his own usual self-interests ... particularly about Cora Sanderson taking a sabbatical from her schooling. Bear Sanderson could not have cared less about her interests. He eventually left the house.

Not thirty minutes later, a horde of Indians came onto the Sanderson property and eventually entering the home ... subsequently murdering his wife. Newly O'Brien and his posse came to arrest the group of Indians on first-degree murder. After the raid, they found a watch belonging to Bear Sanderson. From there, the offenders were locked up in the Dodge City Jail awaiting trial.

Matt Dillion would speak to Cicero Wolfe about defending the Indians in the trial. He first balked at the ideal. Matt Dillion was disappointed about Cicero Wolfe's refusal to try the case. Cora Sanderson convinced Cicero Wolfe to try the case in a court of law ... much to the dismay of Bear Sanderson's wishes. Bear Sanderson wanted revenge for the way they killed his wife. Upon the conclusion of the two-part episode, Cicero Wolfe decided to take the case to court. He did it for one key purpose: to win a not guilty verdict for his clients in court. Something Special!! A Fat 10.4!! An "A++!!"

Impressive story told with much action but little violence
bobforapples-4014630 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The plot concerns Indians on the revenge against steaders and townspeople. The town is arming and Festus is more or less in charge of things. Nobody can come into Dodge or go out after a prominent lady is murdered by Indians and her fine house burned to an absolute cinder. Matt does his best to maintain law and order when a few Indians are arrested for the lady's murder. Matt recruits the help of a stranded-from-out-of-town lawyer, called Cicero, to defend the Indian prisoners in a trial. Donna Mills is great and beautiful in her guest role as the daughter of the prominently murdered lady. Excellent ep not to be missed!
