This wasn't intended to really be the Pilot episode of the show, and that is clear at times. We're never really made aware of who the random guy is fixing the TV (it turns out to be the Dad's brother) for example.
On the whole though this is a decent episode, a nice mix between a traditional family sitcom, with some flashbacks/alternate perspective moments thrown in for good measure.
