Rites of Spring (#4.23)

Warning: Spoilers
Before the big spring party the girls are trying to get back in shape and look awesome. Sophia is worried about losing one pound while the rest with gaining weight. And they go to an aerobic class that doesn't work out too well. They also want to do their hair but this also fails. but they still have time.

I think the best part of this episode is in the hair salon. The way the guy who works on the hair talks we expect to see some great out of the world hair on them, and yet they all just end up looking like Sophia, no wonder she loves this place so much!.

The time when Dorothy talks about her best friend is also kind of funny and sweet.

Weight management battles for the girls.
Sleepin_Dragon18 October 2023
Sophia is worried when she's lost a pound, and weighs in at 98 lbs, keen to get back to 99, she hammers the carbs. The girls decide they need to lose weight, and consider times where they've tried to make personal improvements in the past.

This one hit home, I am really struggling with my weight right now, and I'm hoping that the events here will kickstart me back into action.

Some amusing scenes here, Stand visit and the trip to the hairdressers were funny moments, the gym scene however was hilarious. It was interesting to see just how fit and agile the girls were, they were all so fit.

Lloyd Bochner is back on the show, this time he's playing dishy hairdresser Eduardo, that voice was just magical.

8/10.

Shoes
josephemeryprank4 July 2023
What is it with shoes?

In the first scene Blanche comes into the kitchen in a long nightdress with a bikini underneath.

When she steps onto the scales to weigh herself she is wearing high heeled shoes (which she doesn't take off).

When the others then weigh themselves, they don't take their shoes off either.

Who doesn't at least take their shoes off when weighing themselves?

In this sitcom - like so many others (Frasier, Friends etc etc) - people also keep their shoes on when lounging sprawled out on their sofa. Or likewise on their beds.

Do people really put outside footwear on soft furnishings?

And that's all I have to say!

It's all about losing weight for three and gaining a pound for another.

Warning: Spoilers
Is it my imagination or does Betty White turn back into Sue Ann Nivens? We see elements of Sue Ann briefly in this episode where she insults Dorothy on the scale and infers that a female gym employee is a lesbian (having only learned what that word means in an earlier episode) as she doesn't fall prey to unnecessary suggestive selling. It's ironic that Dorothy and Blanche are the only ones dressed in Solid Gold workout outfits in that class.

Lloyd Bochner is very funny as the pretentious hairdresser who gives the three younger women a unique hairstyle, reminding me of how Rue McLanahan looked like in her debut on "Maude". It's the highlight of this three tiered flashback episode that ends with one of the typical nutty Stan situations involving a money grubbing self help group. The script is funny line wise, in plot wise, but when they are funny, they are laugh out loud funny. But Stan does suggest one good idea here: cheesecake!
