In Golden Girls Forever, show writer Marc Cherry said that this episode became a wraparound due to multiple factors. Bea Arthur was going through a medical issue that forced her off the show for a month, and which required an operation. Her scenes for the beginning and end of the episode were pretaped. With Estelle Getty having to be made up for present and flashback scenes, hers were also pretaped. Finally, Betty White was sick on the night of the episode taping, and you can hear some soreness in her voice.
