Nowadays most people would have a cynical view of the press. It does not stop them spilling the beans to them. Air their dirty laundry in public.

This episode focuses on a rag owned by a thinly disguised Rupert Murdoch type. A media mogul who the authorities told not to interfere with his editors when he purchased his newspaper. His daughter works for the paper though.

She knows artistic posh girl Stephanie Conroy, an old university friend. Stephanie just happens to be married to bad boy Peter Conroy (Geoffrey Whitehead.) The getaway driver in the bullion robbery.

He has absconded to Austria, they have no expedition treaty with Britain. Leaving his wife and mother to deal with a pack of wolves, also known as journalists hunting for a scoop.

DCS Cradock tries to deal with the press to his own advantage. Only they are more slicker than him. One journalist flies to Austria to make his own lucrative deal with Peter Conroy.

Leaving Cradock to break his wife who had no idea just what a habitual criminal her husband is. Maybe Stephanie can entice her errant husband to go to another country, so Cradock can arrest him.

The episode called Rough Tradecertainly had an agenda, it was the tabloid press. I don't think they changed their behaviour.

Geoffrey Whitehead is now better known as the grumpy, disapproving father in law in Not Going Out. I wonder what his thoughts would had been back in 1969. You'll become a well known face in about 40 years time.
