Your Money or Your Life

George and Mildred attend his uncle Nathaniel's funeral. George is upset that he dropped his 50 pence piece on the casket.

Some family members think that his uncle's widow finished him off. She was too physically demanding. She even managed to get the mattress replaced under the 12 month guarantee.

When Milded gets a tip from the widow that George should be properly insured so he can have a good funeral. She arranges to have George adequately insured by Jeffrey.

George realises that he is worth more to Mildred dead than alive.

There are some nice bits. When Mildred looks at George's birth certificate, she notes that one theory has gone out of the window. It has his father's name on it.

When Mildred goes to see the funeral director about George to find out the average cost of a funeral. He is shocked that George is still alive.

Even Jeffrey is being nice when he arranges the life insurance policy. It must be the commission.

When George's uncle dies, Mildred worries about her future when she discovers that George's death policy, is only a small one.

For my money, this is the best episode from the first series, this one is very, very funny. That opening scene where George drops his coin on the coffin is hilarious, as is the scene where George and Mildred meet with the sour faced funeral director.

The humour is definitely sharper and a little more cutting, it really is a classic episode. Who will ever forget George's medical. Whenever you watch a comedy from the 60's or 70's there always seemed to be a funeral themed episode, what better way to get a few laughs.

Is it just me, or is there a bit of déjà vu, do I not remember the two relatives (or maybe just one) appearing in an episode of Steptoe and Son, also a funeral themed plot, I may be wrong.

Classic comedy, 9/10.

Worth watching just for John Carlin

The scene in the Funeral directors is a comedy classic. When Mildred explains to John, that she doesn't want to spend too much money on George's funeral, he just looks at George with disdain, and says "Quite!"

Gets me every time, John was a genius.
