Found this playing on Word's Wayback "channel" on YouTube. It was part of a two-parter featuring Windmill from an episode of GE Theater, and The Gunfighter episode on Tombstone Territory.
Windmill was done as a pilot for a new TV show but couldn't find a sponsor. Then after some rewrites, The Restless Gun appeared as an episode on Schlitz Playhouse of Stars starring John Payne. This time a sponsor was found and the TV series The Restless Gun ran for 39 episodes.
Here Stewart plays a peaceful rancher, Joe Newman, scratching out a living on a small ranch that desperately needs a well and a windmill to provide water for irrigation and for livestock. Barbara Hale play Ellen Newman his demure wife and mother of their two children.
Joe goes into town to see banker Lane McKersher, John McIntire, for a loan but is refused. Once outside, Joe heads for his horse and removes a gun and holster. Ellen tries to dissuade Joe, but there is a shooting competition taking place, and the family could use the prize money.
A notorious gunfighter, Chet Bundy, is in town for the competition, and Joe Newman looks familiar. There was a gun fighter known as Joe Blond. Some claim Blond changed his name and moved to become a trail hand. Joe says he heard a man of that name died a few years back. Regardless, Blond was known for his speed and accuracy with a gun and never lost a gun fight.
Townspeople hear there's a chance there is a gunfighter living among them, if so, they need to run him out of town. But how to recognize him? If anyone can out shoot Chet Bundy then that's their man.
After witnessing the competition, the banker decides to give Joe his loan.
Stewart is a little bit too much Jefferson Smith (Mr. Smith goes to Washington) and Guy Johnson (It's a Wonderful Life) in his impassioned speech to the banker for his loan. Maybe the over-the-top acting turned off sponsors. Stewart was a young 47 when he made this and some of his best films weren't yet made: Vertigo: Bell, Book, and Candle, Anatomy of a Murder, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and How the West was Won to name a few.
If you can find this episode, it's worth a watch.
