Dayton Railsback leads a gang of thieves blasting open the door on an armored car, and then stealing the bags of money inside. Two police officers arrive and open fire before the robbers can escape, and two of them escape leaving Dayton behind. Dayton, tries to run and collapses when he takes a shot in the left hip.
At the Dale State Penitentiary, Dayton tells one of the other robbers, Jane Chalfont, that they gave him 20 years. Chalfont tells Dayton that he'll get out in 12 years with good behavior, and says that Dayton 's cut is $4 million. She tells Dayton that the money was marked, and tells him that it's in a storage locker so Dayton has the only slip and he's the only one who can get it back. Chalfont tells Dayton that they're in it together and assures him that she and Xxx will wait. She insists that they won't cross him, but Dayton walks away with the slip.
Chalfont joins the waiting other robber, Xxx, and says that she told Dayton the money is in the locker and figures that he believed her. She says that by the time Dayton is out, they'll be so far away it won't matter.
Ten Years Later: The Present
Dayton is in the main room, reading a book about the Constitution. One prisoner, a Chicano, prepares to shiv another who betrayed him. Another prisoner, Arkwright, stops the Chicano and says that the screws will lock them up early. The Chicano walks away, and Dayton goes back to his cell. There are other law books in his cell, and Dayton sits on his buck and looks at the locker ticket.
Another prisoner, Woody Reese, comes up wearing a leather jacket. He tells Dayton that he needs legal help, and offers him in the jacket in return for Dayton getting him to minimal security. Dayton agrees to do the paperwork in return for the jacket. Once Arkwright leaves, Dayton tries on the jacket and leaves. The Chicano stabs his target in the hallway with a shiv and walks away. The dying man grabs Dayton as he passed, spilling blood on the jacket and then staggering away.
Dayton returns to his cell as the alarms go off. He turns invisible and realizes what is happening. The guards arrive and take the body away, and Dayton easily slips past them. He brushes past Arkwright, who notices the touch on his sleeve. The guards take Awkwright to his cell, while Dayton leaves the penitentiary and leaves via the gate when an ambulance comes in.
Johnny brings a bagged sandwich to his father Vince, who is working as a security guard at the storage locker. Vince worries that he hasn't raised Johnny right, and Johnny assures him that no one messes with him.
There's a commotion in the racks, and Vince tells Johnny to call the cops while he goes to investigate. He hears Dayton at the storage locker, cursing at his partners when he discovers the money isn't there. Vince sees the invisible man's motions as he goes through the storage box, but can't see Dayton. Dayton rumbles through the other boxes, then shoves Vince to the floor when he notices him.
Johnny hears Vince yelling, and comes into the storage room. Dayton shoves Johnny away, and then forces Vince to "shoot himself" in the chest as Johnny lies stunned. The invisible man plants the gun in Johnny's hand and leaves, and Johnny wakes up, drops the gun, and runs to his dead father. He cradles Vince's corpse in his arms and screams in anguish.
Later, the police arrest Johnny for Vince's murder. He calls in Micki and tells her what happened, and says that he smelled cigars. Micki believes that Johnny is no murderer and promises to get him out. Back at Curious Goods, Micki tells Ryan and Johnny what happened. Jack points out that no jury will accept an occult explanation, and she says that they're going to put Johnny in prison until the trial.
Johnny arrives at the prison by transfer bus, He's taken to the main room of Block C, and most of the other prisoners come over to taunt him as the "new fish". The guards put Johnny in Awkwright's cell.
Dayton meets with his lawyer, Hillman, who tells him that Chalfont and Reese did a good job of covering their trail. Their names are listed on a large safety deposit box, and Dayton figures they haven't spent it. Hillman warns that it will be hard to get the three keys necessary to open the box, and Dayton reminds him that they're talking about $17 million that is in the box. Hillman tells Dayton that one of the men is Lou Bittner and gives Dayton Bittner's address.
Jack checks the storage company's record, and discovers that it belongs to Dayton. Someone paid in advance to cover the fees for 20 years, and he and the cousins wonder who would rent a storage locker for 20 years.
In Prison, Dayton smokes a cigar and notices Johnny working a bag. He recognizes Johnny from the storage company, but Johnny has no idea who Dayton is. Dayton follows Johnny, and Johnny notices Dayton's attention.
Reese approaches Dayton and says that he's getting out in a few days, and wants his jacket back. Dayton tells Reese to come with him, and stabs him when they're away from any witnesses. Reese topples over a railing to the floor below, and Dayton turns invisible when the jacket gets Reese's blood on it. Johnny runs up, following Dayton, but the latter is gone.
That night, Dayton goes to a payphone near Bittner's house and calls him. Dayton tells Bittner that it's good to hear his voice. Bittner hangs up, and Dayton breaks into the man's house. Bittner has called Chalfont and wonders how Dayton found him. Chalfont tells him to move again and change his ID, and Bittner agrees. Dayton overhears Bittner talking to Chalfont, and he says that they should get the money because no one is looking for it.
Once Bittner hangs up, Dayton taunts Bittner and then punches him in the gut. He duct-tapes the unconscious man to a chair, and when he wakes up demands to know where the key is. Dayton beats Bittner until he says the key is around his neck on a chain. The invisible man demands to know where his partner is, and tortured Bittner for the information.
In prison, Johnny stares out of the bars of his shared cells at Dayton's cell. Arkwright says that it's Dayton's cell, and Johnny says that no one is in the cell. When a guard opens his cell to call him away, Johnny looks away for a moment and when he looks back, Dayton is in the cell removing the jacket. A guard opens Dayton's cell door, and the warden comes to see Johnny and Awkwright in the hallway outside their cell, along with the other prisoners.
Dayton joins Johnny, as the warden says that they're looking for the weapon that was used to kill Reese. He starts by questioning Dayton, and the guards leave Dayton away. Johnny slips into Dayton's open cell.
Micki tells the others that she got a visitors pass to see Johnny, and Dayton is also a prisoner there. Ryan and Jack have found an entry in the manifest about a World War II Kamikaze bomber jacket, sold to Reese. Ryan was going to buy the jacket from Reese, but Reese went to jail. Jack goes to check into what the jacket does, and how Reese and Dayton ended up in prison. Meanwhile, Micki and Ryan go to talk to Johnny.
Johnny searches Dayton's cell and finds the jacket on the cot. He finds the storage company ticket inside: the same company where Vince was killed. There's writing on the back of three names: Kingston, Chalfont, and Bittner. Johnny writes down the names, and Dayton returns and starts choking Johnny. Arkwright arrives and interrupts, and pulls Johnny out. Outside, Awkwright asks Johnny why he's dogging Dayton but Johnny doesn't respond.
Later, Ryan and Micki meet with Dayton under security. He tells them Reese was stabbed the day before, and Micki explains about the jacket. Johnny says that Dayton has the jacket, and he smokes the same cigars Johnny smelled at the storage company. He gives the cousins the three names from the ticket, and Ryan says that they'll check them out.
Chalfont goes to Bittner's house, calls to him by name, and finds him, dead and taped to a chair, his throat cut. Ryan and Micki are there, and Ryan says that Bittner was dead when they got there. Chalfont claims that she just came about a cleaning job, but Ryan doesn't believe her. She punches Ryan, draws a gun, shoots at Micki and misses, and runs out.
Back at the shop, Jack tells Micki and Ryan that Kamikaze pilots believed they invisible. Lewis made the jacket make the invisibility real, and they figure Dayton has a perfectly alibi and a perfect murder weapon. Jack has learned that Dayton was the only one who went to prison when him and three accomplices stole the $17 million, and the accomplices were never found. Ryan goes after Chalfont, and Jack warns that they can't necessarily prove Johnny is innocent.
In prison, Johnny sees Dayton walk past. Arkwright stops Johnny from going after Dayton, and tells him to leave it alone. Johnny says that he can't, and the alarm goes off as the guards find a dead man. Realizing what happened, Johnny runs to Dayton's cell just in time to see him turn invisible as he wipes the dead man's blood on the jacket. Johnny tries to go to the warden, but a guard stops him and punches Johnny unconscious.
Dayton goes to Chalfont's house that night and whispers to her through the window. She looks out but sees no one, and gets a call from Kingston. Dayton slips in through an open window, while Chalfont draws a bath and loads her gun. She tells Kingston that they'll be out of the country before Dayton is out of prison, and she'll see him the next day.
Chalfont hears water splashing in the bath tub. She reaches in and Dayton, in the water, pulls her down and drowns her. She manages to escape and runs out, and Dayton goes after her and yells that there's no where she can hide. Before Chalfont can unchain the front door and escape, Dayton grabs her. She breaks away and hides in a closet, locking the door behind her.
Micki and Ryan arrive at Chalfont's address.
Dayton shoots through the door, and Micki and Ryan hear the shot and bang on the front door. They finally break the window and unlock the chain. Meanwhile, Dayton enters the closet and demands to know where the money is, then strangles Chalfont. Ryan and Micki arrive and find Chalfont dead.
In prison, Johnny notices that Dayton has reappeared in his cell. The guards take Johnny and Arkwright out, as Dayton glares at Johnny's and chuckles.
Jack returns to the shop, and tells Ryan and Micki that Bittner had a substantial criminal record. He dropped out of sight ten years ago, when the robbery took place and Dayton went to prison. Ryan figures that Dayton was at the storage company looking for the loot, and killed Vince. Micki realizes that Dayton is killing off his former accomplices for betraying him. Jack says that they have to get word to Johnny, and find Kingston before Dayton does.
In prison, Johnny is showering with the other prisoners. Dayton is there, and Johnny accuses him of killing Vince. Putting a shiv to Johnny's neck, Dayton slams Johnny against the wall and asks if he wants a piece of him. A guard comes in and orders Dayton out, and Dayton tells Johnny that he got lucky.
Later, Johnny gets a note from his friends. Awkwright asks when Vince died, and Johnny tells him that Dayton found a way out. The older prisoner says that there are old heating vents, and one of them leads up to the roof. Awkwright never used it and even made a key for the cell door, but realized that he wouldn't fit in the real world and belongs in prison. However, Awkwright figures that Johnny needs the way out, and if Johnny stays another night, Dayton will kill him.
Dayton meets with Hillman, and tells him that if he doesn't get greedy then he won't come after him. The lawyer has Kingston's address and gives it to Dayton, who leaves.
Jack and Ryan are unable to find Kingston, and they go back to the shop. Jack figures that they need to track down whoever in the outside world is feeding Dayton information, and they need to track them down before Dayton realizes they're on to him and come after them.
That night in the prison, Johnny uses the key Awkwright has given him to break out of his cell, and makes his way to Dayton's cell. He opens the door using the key, and creeps y up on the sleeping Dayton. When Johnny tries to grab the jacket from around Dayton, Dayton wakes up and stabs him in the chest.
Ryan and Micki go to Hillman's apartment and tells him that they want to talk to him before Kingston is killed and Hillman is implicated.
Dayton drags Johnny's body to Johnny's cell, and tells Awkwright to put Johnny in his bed.
Once Ryan and Micki turn Hillman over to the police and go back to the shop, Jack calls the warden and tells him that someone in prison is working with Hillman. The warden isn't impressed, and Jack insists that the warden has to have Dayton separated from the other prisoners. When the warden doesn't see why Dayton would come back, he hangs up.
Outside of his cell, Dayton wipes Johnny's blood on the jacket. Nothing happens, and Johnny comes in and points out that Dayton has to kill someone to make the jacket work. Awkwright is there and closes Dayton's cell door, trapping him in the hallway. He's already opened the vent grate, and that will "prove" how Dayton got out and murdered his accomplices.
Dayton stabs Awkwright when he yells for the guards, then uses the blood to turn invisible. A guard arrives, opening the gate, and the invisible Dayton shoves past him. Johnny goes after Dayton as the alarms go off, and Johnny knocks out one guard and dodges the shots of the others.
Johnny sees a gate door close, and goes in after Dayton. When Johnny goes in, closing the door behind him, the invisible Dayton slashes Johnny across the back and easily avoids Johnny's blows. Johnny grabs a mob and manages to knock the shiv out of Dayton's hands. They struggle for the blade, and then Johnny breaks free and throw cleaning fluid at where he thinks Dayton is. Johnny then sets the fluid on fire, and the invisible Dayton burns to death. He turns visible, and the guards arrive just in time to see Dayton die.
Later, Johnny is released from prison. The warden tells him that the wounds on Awkwright matched those of the other inmate victims. Along with the ticket, they had enough evidence to confirm Dayton was the killer. Micki, Jack, and Ryan come to collect Johnny when he's released. The warden asks Jack to keep quiet about the whole thing, and Jack agrees.
At the car, Johnny says that Awkwright told him about the escape route because he figured Johnny had something better to do with his life.
