- A hostage incident takes Nick back to Berlin in 1966.
- Holding Dr. Natalie Lambert (Catherine Disher) hostage, a gunman enters the police department and threatens to kill her and anyone else if they don't turn over his brother to him. Several police officers are shot, before Knight can stop him. The gunman pulls a grenade, releasing Natalie as he throws it as police officers shoot him. Knight (Geraint Wyn Davies) runs for the grenade, catching, crushing it before it explodes.
In his search for the Abarat, the Ancient Book of Miracles, Mr. Thomas aka Nick Knight, is in worn-torn Germany where he meets the father, daughter and son, wishing to escape their country. LaCroix (Nigel Bennett) watching from afar is contemplating his moves to thwart Knight's attempt to find the cure for his vampirism. He agreed to help them through the catacombs that would free them but LaCroix's interference has the Secret Police chasing down the family for the American agent, Mr. Thomas. The brother in is disbelief of Knight's help, heads out on his own, only to be captured and beaten into confessing the whereabouts of the agent and his family. Escaping the Secret Police, Knight locates their brother, bringing him to his family in the catacombs and across into a new world. LaCroix finds the Abarat, setting torch to the others, destroys the library. Upon Knight's return, he taunts him holding the book, "You think I will let you have this?" and throws it into the fire. Unable to catch it, he watches it burn.
