When Alex accidentally breaks the Baby Jesus from Mother Buchanan's prized, hand-painted Nativity set, the ladies hatch a plan to replace it; Bree is determined to win the annual neighborhood decorating contest.
This series was mishandled by CBS back in the day and could have been a worthy successor to female buddy comedies like THE GOLDEN GIRLS and DESIGNING WOMEN. The writing was sharp and the cast made it even better. This is one the best-written and played Xmas episodes of all-time. It's a shame so few people have seen it.
All the actresses shine but Harriet Samson Harris stands out here. Her hysterical reaction when Alex breaks the figure is priceless and the whole panic scene works wonderfully for the ladies. Later, her drunk bit is one of the funniest ever seen. Beth Broderick portrays Delilah's paranoia beautifully and Charlotte Ross plays against type here when Bree starts acting like a Drill Sergeant possessed in regard to the decorating contest. Judith Ivey gets the serious scene when she goes up against Mother Buchanan - who softens a little by episode's end.
Charles Nelson Reilly appears as the harried manager of the craft store.
One of the best-written, most original, and funniest Xmas episodes ever. Seek this out! Fans of THE GOLDEN GIRLS and DESIGNING WOMEN will especially enjoy it. 9/10.
