Jerome was orphaned and raised by a grandmother who appears to be a bit mentally unstable herself. She called Jerome "my little Francy" and kept him in frilly shirts and kept his hair long. As an adult, Jerome wears his hair normally (at least for 1965) but the sight of long hair on a woman can set him off.
Erkine lives alone in Washington, D.C. He's the top investigator for the FBI, based at FBI headquarters but flies just about anywhere in the United States on cases. He's a widower. His only child, a daughter, is a college student. She's also dating his partner, Jim Rhodes.
He finds it troubling, especially given how his wife died.
