- The episode begins with Debra talking to Ray about a picture that Ally drew of the family. It appeared to show Frank and Marie as giants attacking their house. But Ally clarified and explained that they were monsters, not Grandma and Grandpa. More drawings were discussed throughout the episode. Later, while Ray's working in the Press Box at Shea Stadium, he's having fun joking with his friends and co-workers Kevin Daniels (who does play-by-play for the New York Mets) and Andy the "stat guy". Kevin gets a call from Roy Firestone and asks him to fill in for Harvey Johnson on his TV show Sportscall. Roy also says he wants Ray on the show with him. While they were filming the show, Ray doesn't know how to act because he's never been on TV before. He stumbles over his words and pronounces words incorrectly, such as "axed" instead of "asked". On top of that, he ends up scratching the microphone attached to his tie while he's talking. Even though his family praised him for doing well on the show, they actually felt differently - When they found out Ray was going to be on the next show as well, they criticize everything he does: how he talks and acts. They didn't want him to make a fool out of himself on national television again. The second show on which Ray appeared didn't go so well. But when he got home, his family still tried to make him feel good.
- Ray (Ray Romano) is invited to give his views on live TV with presenter Roy Firestone & colleague Kevin Daniels (Kevin James). Ray's other colleague is Andy (Andy Kindler). Roy's regular presented Harvey Johnson is on vacation and Roy asked Kevin for a suggestion about who could fill in. Roy wanted a newspaper guy and Kevin suggested Ray. Ray is nervous and asks Kevin is Roy is familiar with his work and has read his column.
Kevin covers sports on Radio, and he is asked about his article on amateur athletes using steroids in sports, which does not go very well. Ray's answers are bland and don't provide any color to the issue of use of steroids in sports. Ray says that he did write the article and that it is a growing problem. He calls is an epidemic. 64% of athletes agreed to the use of steroids if it guaranteed them a medal and would also lead to their death in 5 years' time. He crosses his legs but is awkward in his pose and scratches his chest which causes the noise to be caught in the microphone. His family is excited, and they all watch it together. Marie (Doris Roberts) passed out fliers all over the neighborhood.
They all initially appreciate him. Debra (Patricia Heaton) calls him a big TV star and Frank (Peter Boyle) takes pics of him with the whole family. Marie says that Ray was the whole show and was better than Roy.
When he is called on the show again, the family gives him honest feedback. Debra asks him to practice saying a few words properly like asterisk, asking, cinnamon and so on. Ray is all nervous now and goes to his parents as he is sure that they will boost his confidence by saying that there was nothing wrong with him and that he looked great on TV. Marie is surprised that Ray was invited back to the show. Frank points Ray was scratching the microphone and Marie says he was waving his hands all over the place. Both found Ray's voice to be monotonous.
Ray is upset since everything everyone said after the show the previous night was a lie. Marie explains to Ray that all parents lie to their kids for their own betterment. Ray says that Marie lied to him about his poetry talent, his inability to talk to girls and so on. Marie says that Ray got a writing job, because his parents praised him and encouraged him whenever he wrote something. That's what parents do.
Robert (Brad Garrett) still feels left out. Robert is used to being treated as second fiddle, while every little accomplishment of Ray is praised lavishly. This makes Ray very conscious on TV. Ray stinks up the appearance on TV and this time his family gives him honest feedback, that he was bad. The jokes were not funny, the voice modulation did not work. Ray liked it better when the family fake praised him and they all do to support him.
Meanwhile Ally (Madylin Sweeten) is drawing pics of monsters attacking the house, which look suspiciously like her grandparents. But Ally clarifies that those are not grandma and grandpa, those are Halloween monsters. Debra is not convinced as one monster is bald and the other one is carrying a covered dish.
