- Ray tells the story of how he used to throw parties as a teenager when Marie and Frank were gone. Marie goes berserk.
- After more than 20 years, Frank turns the heater on in his house, only to find a rattling noise in the vent. Ray takes a look and pulls out a bottle cap that was in there. He then tells his parents that it's been in the vent since he was in high school. There's a flashback scene to when Ray threw a party in high school, and Ray is seen drinking a bottle of beer, then tossing the bottle cap across the living room into the vent. Furious that her son would do that, Marie doesn't give Ray any cake on his birthday, or give him his birth-minute kiss. Marie then shuns Ray and turns to nurture Robert instead.
- Marie is excited about Ray's birthday in 3 days' time. She also always gives him a birth-minute kiss, at the exact time of his birth at 8:46 pm, even though once Ray was in the shower. Robert is devastated to know that he never had any birthday parties. Frank and Marie just smeared cake on his face and took a picture for future reference.
It is the day before Ray's birthday, and everyone is gathered at Marie's. Ray is cold and Marie gets Frank to crank up the heat when she starts to hug him to give him body heat. As Frank increases the temperature, they all hear a rattling sound coming from the heat vents. Ray crouches down into the vents to investigate. When Ray retrieves a beer bottle cap from the heat vent in Marie's house, he confesses to a party in the house he had 20 years ago when Marie and Frank were out of town.
Marie gets mad, as Ray drank and smoked and probably had sex in her house and lied to her all these years. Marie says that Ray pretended to be a good boy, while he was lying to her all these years. He had many parties in the house, and probably smoked many substances.
On Ray's birthday, Frank and Marie come over to wish Ray but Marie is still mad at Ray. Marie refuses to even give him his birth-minute kiss. Frank used to think of Ray as weak and pathetic but changes his opinion after seeing Ray's rebellious streak.
Marie starts to favor Robert and Frank starts to bond with Ray. Ray can't have sex with Debra on his birthday unless his mother has kissed him.
Marie bakes Robert a 1st Birthday cake as Robert never had his 1st birthday party. Ray goes over to Marie's and apologizes for all the bad things he has done, but Marie is implacable. Robert is surprised that he is the good boy of the house all of a sudden. Marie showers all of her love and affection on him. Marie cooks Robert his favorite meal, steak and macaroni cheese and Alfredo, while Ray is not invited to dinner. Robert is suspicious when Marie is interested in how Robert spent his day at work. Marie even laughs when Robert talks about filling paperwork at the police station, as if he told a joke. Marie gives Robert his first birthday kiss and tells him that she loves him.
Ray is angry that Marie is trying to make him feel guilty about a party he had over 20 years ago, and he leaves. Marie and Robert cut the cake and have it together. But they have absolutely nothing to talk about.
When Robert asks if Marie would be as mad if he had a party, she just assumes that Ray was covering-up for Robert, refusing to hear otherwise and forgives Ray. Marie takes the cake and rushes over to Ray's. Marie is happy that Ray is still her good boy and is reassured that she was a good mother to him. The Universe makes sense to her again. Ray knows that it was his party, but he never corrects Marie as he is happy with things going back to normal.
