Everybody Loves Raymond

Summaries

  • Raymond's neighbors come over to voice their numerous complaints about his parents, and Frank and Marie walk in on them. Raymond now feels humiliated and guilty of betraying his parents.
  • The episode opens with Ray cooking for baseball manager Tommy Lasorda, who criticizes Ray's cooking. This sequence has no relevance to the rest of the episode. As the main story begins, Ray and Debra are waken up by flood lamps outside of Frank and Marie's house. Something triggered the motion sensor which turned on the lights. And then Frank's new car alarm goes off. With hardly any sleep, the sound of a buzz saw is heard in Ray's house from across the street. Debra is mad at Ray for giving his father the Big Book of Hobbies...as is Robert who hasn't gotten any sleep either. Then the phone rings and it's Ruth Greene from two doors down complaining about Frank and Marie. She tells Debra that the neighbors are coming over to talk about their parents' obnoxious behavior. The neighbors Ruth, Arthur, Mack, and Lilly are soon gathered at Ray's house all telling stories about how horrible it is to have Frank and Marie as their neighbors. Mack even has a video tape of Frank caught in the act, showing Frank getting the morning newspaper on four separate occasions in his underclothes. One incident shows him dropping a box of fragile food and then eating the food off the pavement, whilst another shows him, with only a towel wrapped around his hips, getting the newspaper, and then dropping the towel, exposing his buttocks. Frank and Marie then suddenly happen to barge in during the showing of the tape. They are appalled that Ray would turn against his family like that, with Marie even going so far as to steal Ray's VCR. Ray later finds out that his parents have made peace with the neighbors and they're all friends again. But they shun Ray because of his betrayal. Feeling angry with his parents, Ray visits the priest at his church. He asks for forgiveness for feeling this way toward his parents. He feels he's broken one of the Ten Commandments by not honoring his mother and father. When the priest finds out that it's Frank and Marie Barone Ray is describing, he forgives him instantly. The priest himself has had a past history with Frank and knows what kind of person he is. Back at home, Ray sees images in the mirror...his m,ind playing tricks on him. First he sees his parents. Then he sees The Pope. Now Ray feels extremely guilty. So he goes over to his parents house to confront them. But when he starts to speak, the words "I'm sorry" come out instead. Then his parents are happy with him again. The episode ends with Robert at the priest's office, in the same position as Ray.

Synopsis

  • Ray presents Frank with a big book of hobbies to keep him from disturbing them, but it backfires. Frank starts disturbing the entire neighborhood with the buzz saw, car alarm and new motion sensor activated halogen lights that illuminate the entire neighborhood etc. Frank parks his car on the street and he believes that the halogen lights will keep people away from stealing it. Frank starts working in his garage at 7 30 am in the morning. Robert comes over to Ray's to take a nap as he cannot get any sleep over at his own house. Robert already broke his nose when he ran into an oak tree, when he went outside at night to disable the car alarm.

Frank meanwhile feels very alive. He has the satisfaction of building something with his own 2 hands.

The neighbors come to Ray and Debra's house to discuss the issues. They were complaining about the noise Frank makes in his garage, that he blows leaves from his backyard in other people's backyards, packages are not delivered to their rightful owners etc. The neighbors want Ray to talk to his parents about the problems that the entire neighborhood is facing.

Ray tries to defend them, but the neighbors threaten legal action to throw them out. They were also watching a tape of Frank getting the morning paper in various stages of undress. This is when Frank and Marie walk into Ray's house. Frank sees that everybody is watching a video of him half naked, picking up the newspaper. Marie says that Ray is plotting against his own parents. Frank accuses Ray to taking sides against the family. Marie is livid and takes the entire VCR with her, as she cannot get the tape out of the machine. They get very upset, and Ray feels guilty.

Ray cannot sleep at night as he hasn't heard a peep out of his parent's home the entire night. Debra says that what happened was probably for the best as this was the only way to get through to them.

Frank and Marie have a small party for the neighbors and patch things up. Ray is treated as Persona Non-Grata. Ray is not allowed to have any food. Frank and Marie lavish their praise on Robert and ignore Ray throughout the proceedings. Ray cannot sleep that night either due to the all-consuming guilt. He feels that even the Pope is judging him.

Ray still feels guilty and goes to the church. Ray explains the situation with his parents and that he feels guilty about betraying them. The priest suggests that Ray's guilt is coming from something deeper, maybe he secretly wanted his parents to be cast out from the lane. When the priest learns that Ray is Frank's and Marie's son, he absolves him immediately. The priest even gives his blessings to Ray to confront Frank and Marie, and to ask them to stop manipulating him, as they have done all their life.

Ray goes back all confident wanting to confront Marie and Frank, for manipulating him. But he ends up apologizing to both. As soon as Ray apologizes, all is forgiven, and he is accepted back into the fold. Robert is again relegated to last priority. Robert visits the priest and confesses that he wishes his parents were dead.
