The start of the show says it's 1983. Later, Chris is talking about how everyone at school has Valentine's Day fever and a kid walks by holding a sign for the Valentine's Day dance on Friday, February 14th. In 1983, February 14th was on a Monday.
In one scene, a boy is seen pushing the "tape strip" to signal the bus to stop. Those strips didn't exist on city buses in 1983.
