- The Augments are on their way to Cold Station 12, where Augments embryos are kept.
- The Augments have escaped in a bird of prey with their 'father' Dr. Arik Soong. To find out where they went, Enterprise goes to the location Soong told the Augments were raised. Someone has been left behind. The augments are on their way to Cold Station 12, where the last Augment embryos are kept. They brought incubators to grow them up. Tensions are building however between Augments leader Malik and Soong. He constantly questions the doctor's leadership and disagrees with about every decision made by him. He thinks it is nonsense that Soong orders that no human life should be taken on the station.—Arnoud Tiele (imdb@tiele.nl)
- Dr. Soong heads to Cold Station 12 in the Bird of Prey with the Augments to get more embryos. Meanwhile, without any lead, the Enterprise travels to the place where the Augments were raised. There they find Smike, who was left behind due to his inferior abilities. Dr. Soong and the Augments imprison and torture the scientists, trying to force their leader, Dr. Jeremy Lucas, to disclose the security code to access the embryos. Malik has frictions with his "father" Dr. Soong in the dispute of the leadership of the Augments. Archer, Dr. Phlox and a small crew are beamed to the station to rescue the prisoners and the tension between humans and Augments increases; then the evil Malik releases lethal pathogens in the station.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- After the escape of Doctor Soong (Brent Spiner) and the Augments, Captain Archer and his crew proceed to the coordinates Soong had provided earlier in the mission. On Trialis IV, the away team find an abandoned building where the young Augments were raised and schooled by "father" Soong. They also capture a banished member of the Augments named Udar. Nicknamed "Smike" (Kaj-Erik Eriksen) by his Augment siblings after a handicapped character from the comic novel Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens, he is taken to Enterprise. ' Analysis reveals that although Udar's DNA is similar to the other Augments, he has none of their enhanced abilities (except for superior hearing). Archer finds that Soong's augments took their medical equipment that included artificial wombs. They figure Soong is after the remaining embryos (there are more than 1800 left).. Archer needs to find Soong and tells Udar about his biological parents, who lived and died on Earth.
Meanwhile, Soong and the Augments capture Barzai, a Denobulan medical ship, and use it to enter the medical facility called Cold Station 12 (C-12). Malik wanted to attack C-12 directly and kill everyone there by disabling their life support systems, but Soong wanted no one to be killed during their attack. Soong is dismayed to know that Malik killed Raakin during his absence. Malik lies and says that it was an accident. Meanwhile Persis is not Malik's mistress. They soon overpower security and capture the scientists there, including its chief medical officer, Doctor Jeremy Lucas (Richard Riehle) (Doctor Phlox's Interspecies Medical Exchange counterpart). Due to security protocols, tensions begin to surface between Soong and Malik (Alec Newman), as to how to coerce Lucas into divulging the entry codes to the augmented embryos. Malik convinces Soong to torture Lucas, and failing that, to expose a scientist to a deadly pathogen using a containment chamber. Soong injects the scientist with a pathogen to make their blood boil, but Lucas still resists. Soong orders Malik to release the anti-pathogen, but Malik refuses and the scientist dies a painful death.
Enterprise approaches C-12 within transporter range (where Soong tells them to back off as they have hostages), and beams an away team (including Phlox) to the facility. They are soon detected, however, and imprisoned with the facility's staff. Meanwhile, Commander T'Pol, having lost contact with the team, attempts to destroy the station by initiating its self destruct sequence, but the captured Klingon ship intervenes (it jams the communications of the Enterprise and prevents it from sending the signal) (it also attacks the Enterprise when it moves to destroy the facility with its weapons). Malik uses Phlox's friendship with Lucas to finally coerce the security codes from Lucas (by threatening to expose Phlox to a pathogen as well). Soong, who had previously stolen 19 genetically enhanced and frozen embryos from C-12, is now able to access the remaining 1,800, a carry-over from the Eugenics Wars. Soong and the Augments then escape, but not before Malik kills Smike, helps himself to a number of pathogen samples, and sets the viral containment fields to fail.
