The Espionage Ring Around Ensign O'Toole
The USS Appleby is in the lively port of Hong Kong. Ensign O'Toole (Dean Jones) and Lt. St. John (Jack Mullaney) go to a nightclub housing some unsavory characters. This includes a Peter Lorre/Sydney Greenstreet parodied pair- Delacroix (Howard Morris, Ernest "T" Bass- "The Andy Griffith Show") and Rodney Frazer (character actor Robert Emhardt, who also had a memorable role on "The Andy Griffith Show"). Mr. Frazer is looking to smuggle a jewel to San Fransisco unknowingly on Ensign O'Toole where an awaiting man will pick it up and pay Frazer and Delacroix. O'Toole is approached in the bar by Scotland Yard Inspector Hastings (the great comedic character actor Bernard Fox). Hastings goes with O'Toole aboard the Appleby to explain to him and Commander Stoner (Jack Albertson) that Frazer and Delacroix are notorious thieves trying to smuggle the Bangador Emerald. He instructs O'Toole to go along with Ilona (Chana Eden), a woman who introduced herself to O'Toole as the owner of the club, but is in with Frazer and Delacroix. O'Toole goes along with ordering a new tailored suit, in which the emerald is placed. Plot twists are abound when the suit is picked up.
This a fun little espionage sendup with fine comedic work. Howard Morris' Peter Lorre accent is amusing and Bernard Fox always adds another level of enjoyment to any work he is in.
