The trampoline-like device used to rescue Roy and Johnny from the ledge of the burning building is called a Browder Life Safety Net, or Life Net for short; the trampoline was itself based on the Life Net. Developed in the 1880s, the Life Net was a controversial device almost from the word "go,"due to the risk of injury or death, both of the party being rescued and of fire fighters on the ground, especially if the jumpers were civilians. By the 1970s, Life Nets were still considered authorized equipment, but usage of them had become rare. In 1977, a hotel fire in Amsterdam resulted in 33 deaths, many from guests who had thrown their luggage to the Life Net below before jumping themselves. By 1983, improvements in firefighting and rescue equipment led to the phasing out of Life Nets altogether. Today, they are mainly found on display at firefighting museums.
