Emmy nominee Bob Newhart guests as Ben Hollander, a distraught architect whose degenerating eyesight causes him to be despondent while a spirited new nurse, Samantha Taggart, joins the staff. Elsewhere, disaster strikes when the doctors suspect a mother is abusing her child while Dr. Corday learns something shocking about the charismatic Dr. Dorset, and Dr. Archie Morris is overwhelmed by the chaos and grisly conditions of life in the E.R.—Annonymous

Finally recovered, Luka's first day back in the ER is a busy one, and he plans to return to Africa in two months. Lewis fears distraught architect Ben Hollander's degenerating eyesight makes him despondent. Both deal with alcoholic mother Paula Martin, who endangered her youngest boy, so social services decide to place him and his pre-teen brother with father Paul, driving her to an extreme desperate reaction. Spirited, resourceful new nurse Samantha "Sam" Taggart 'succeeds' Abby, who returns to medical school but also continues to work as a nurse to afford the tuition, absurdly now qualified to give some surgical blessings. Morris is left greatly overwhelmed by the chaos and grisly conditions of life in the ER, especially a case involving an injured child and his desperate, alcoholic mother. Romano shows off his new prosthetic arm, but hasn't mastered the complex commands, making it a robot-menace. Elizabeth finds out that lover Dr. Dorset is married.—KGF Vissers
