- Laura's silence forces Rob to recount their evening out to determine what he did that made her infuriated over jeopardizing Ritchie's college future.
- Rob, initially puzzled by Laura's sudden coldness towards him, returns from running into a number of their friends having after-dinner coffee. He finally figures out her chilly demeanor stems from his picking up the check for the entire dinner. Rob refuses to change his behavior and claims he will continue to pay for dinner checks when they're out with friends - until he sees a reflection of his behavior in the actions of his son, Ritchie.—aldanoli
- Rob and Laura are driving home after a night on the town, which included attendance at a play and after-theater drinks with the Sorrells, Sally and Herman Glimscher, whom they happened to run into at a restaurant. A stone-faced and quietly stern Laura is obviously mad at Rob, but he doesn't know why. Eventually Laura mentions that her ire has to do with not being able to send Ritchie to college. Rob is now even more perplexed. Deducing that what he did happened at the restaurant, Rob runs the entire encounter through his mind. As he comes to incident after incident that could be the culprit, Rob deduces that they couldn't be the matters in question since they have nothing to do with sending Ritchie to college and that Laura was still in a good mood at the time. Finally Rob comes to the end of their restaurant visit and realizes Laura got mad when he picked up the check for the entire group, which is his habit. She isn't only angry about the check because Buddy was the host for the evening and that, while Rob and Laura only had coffee, Buddy, Pickles, Sally and Herman all had dinner, she is angry because she feels that Rob, in this continual act of picking up the check, is trying to buy love and acceptance which he doesn't need to do. This incident leads to an all out argument as Rob sees nothing wrong with being generous toward friends. Rob vows to do exactly the same during an evening out with the same foursome the next night. Looking for validation on his stance, Rob speaks to Jerry about the situation, but Rob gets a slightly clearer perspective from an unexpected source.—Huggo
- Driving home together, Rob retraces resent events to explain Laura's current silent treatment of him. Narrowing it down to actions at a restaurant, he picks through incidents where he and Laura ran across several friends having after-dinner coffee (Buddy, Buddy's wife Pickles, Sally and her date Herman Glimscher), finally determining that Laura's fury arose when he picked up the check. Since they only had coffee while the others had full dinners, Laura charges Rob with chronically buying the affections of his friends. Rob heatedly disagrees and resolves to continue exhibiting generosity - that is until behavior in his son Ritchie makes him rethink his position.—statmanjeff
