- Facing off with Mel over a rejected script, Rob leaves the show, fuming when Buddy and Sally don't join him.
- In this flashback show, Rob recalls his first day as a writer on "The Alan Brady Show." Although Buddy and Sally had already been on staff, Rob was hired as the "head writer," causing him some friction with his established co-workers, who summarily ridiculed and dismissed his initial sketch idea for the show. When Alan rejected the script Buddy and Sally turned in, Rob realized what he must do to salvage all three of their reputations.—aldanoli
- Rob, Sally and Buddy argue with Mel over a long seventeen-minute sketch (which took five days to write) that Mel wants to scrap - solely, they believe, because it hits a little too close to home for Mel. Rob, Buddy and Sally vow to quit if they have to rewrite a good sketch without Alan having even seen it, but only Rob quits when Mel won't back down. This incident prompts Rob to reminisce with Laura about when he was first hired as head writer ten years earlier. Buddy and Sally had already been the show's staff writers for a year, but Rob, who had little experience, was hired nonetheless to bring a new style of writing to the show. Buddy and Sally didn't take too well to either Rob's appointment as their boss or his different direction for the show, but Rob ultimately took it upon himself to do something to save not only his job but Buddy and Sally's as well. He hopes that they'll come through for him this time around.—Huggo
- A sketch about a brother-in-law marrying his way to the top hits too close to home for Mel, who rejects it without ever showing it to Alan. This sparks a confrontation where Rob walks out on the show. Since Buddy and Sally don't show solidarity by joining him, Rob feels betrayed and, once home with Laura, recalls (via flashback) his first day on the job where Mel hired him as the head writer - above veterans Buddy and Sally, who resented it and for which a nervous Rob struggled thereafter to earn their respect.—statmanjeff
