THE DETECTIVES – Other Cheek - 1961

This one is episode 64 of the 97 episode run of, THE DETECTIVES. This series starred Robert Taylor and ran between 1959 and 1962. The first two seasons ran at a half hour and the last season had a runtime of an hour. The series followed the detective squad in a big city precinct. Cast regulars included, Mark Goddard, Russell Thorson, Tige Andrews, Lee Farr and Adam West. Robert Taylor headlines as Police Captain, Matt Holbrook.

First night on the job, rookie Detective Lee Kinsolving, is involved in a shootout, while on a stakeout with Detective, Russell Thorson. The Detectives had caught two men breaking into a warehouse. The men refused to come quietly and rounds were exchanged. The man Kinsolving fired at died at the scene, the other man escaped.

Captain of Detectives, Robert Taylor is called to the scene for a look. He congratulates the rookie on his fine work. Kinsolving however is rattled by the whole experience. He wants to resign from the force. Taylor has a quiet talk with the man and calms him down.

Kinsolving and Detective Mark Goddard are sent to the home of the dead man to tell his wife. The woman, Joan Marshall, really does not seem all that upset. She does ask if the other man was captured. This comment sets off alarm bells for the Detectives. They start to quiz Marshall about who the other man was. Marshall clams up and tells the Detectives to leave, which they do.

Goddard however stops outside and puts an ear to the door. Sure enough, Marshall is on the blower asking for Max. Max, (Edmund Hashim) is well known to the boys in blue. Goddard hears Marshall ask if Hashim is at Terence de Marney's place. De Marney is another underworld type known to the Police. De Marney is a defrocked doctor who patches up crooks for cash. It seems that Hashim had caught a bullet in the shootout. He is having de Marney patch him up.

Detectives, Goddard, Kinsolving and Tige Andrews make a quick trip to de Marney's apartment. Goddard and Andrews boot in the front door while Kinsolving watches the back. Hashim, bolts out the back as Andrews and Goddard make their appearance at the front. Kinsolving yells at Hashim to stop, which draws a barrage of lead from Hashim in reply. Kinsolving can't bring himself to fire in return and Hashim escapes.

The Detectives pay another visit to Miss Marshall's apartment for a further chat. No joy here as it seems the woman has cleared out. Clues soon point to a shooting club on the edge of town. Sure enough, Marshall and Hashim are holed up in a small cabin. Both are armed to the teeth with various revolvers and shotguns. It also turns out that Miss Marshall is quite handy with firearms. Marshall and Hashim had been stepping out behind her now dead husbands back.

Detectives Andrews, Goddard and Kinsolving come a calling. They get several shotgun blasts from both Marhall and Hashim for their troubles. A full shootout develops with both Goddard and Andrews going down wounded. It is up to Kinsolving to step up and settle the issue. This he does, by killing Hashim and capturing Marshall.

This is an excellent episode, with plenty of action and gritty violence throughout. I really like this series.

Louis Wayne (Lee Kinsolving) is the rookie Detective on his first night on the job. He is involved in a shootout during a break in that leaves one man dead. The other escapes, potentially injured.

Wayne is seriously shaken up after his ordeal. Captain Matt Holbrook wants to recommend him for a commendation but is concerned with him being so rattled.

His nervousness is evident when the detectives show up to give the grave news to the dead man's wife.

In fact as the detectives hunt for the escaped man, Wayne shows his reluctance to shoot as the man flees. He even wants to quit the force.

Captain Holbrook is having none of it and instead tries to boost his confidence.

It is only going to be a matter of time before Wayne has to step up and pull the trigger again.

Kinsolving brings a lot of angst to the role, but the acting looked a bit dicey to me. I think Captain Holbrook was very patient with Louis Wayne. He needed to get back to police academy.
