THE DETECTIVES – Decoy - 1959

This one is episode 4 of the 97 episode run of, THE DETECTIVES. This series starred Robert Taylor and ran between 1959 and 1962. The first two seasons ran at a half hour and the last season had a runtime of an hour. The series followed the detective squad in a big city precinct. Cast regulars included, Mark Goddard, Russell Thorson, Tige Andrews, Lee Farr and Adam West. Robert Taylor headlines as Police Captain, Matt Holbrook.

A man, Bruce Gordon, is walking out of the court house where he was talking with the Police. As he reaches his car, another man, Jack Lambert, steps out from across the street and starts shooting. Gordon is winged, but manages to jump in his car and escape.

That evening, Detective Russell Thorson pays Gordon a visit at his apartment. It seems that Gordon is a key witness in a mob trial. Gordon was a boxing manager who was pushed out by the mob. Gordon is going to spill the beans on the whole rotten mess. Needless to say the mob is less than happy with this idea. They send their ace hit-man, Jack Lambert, to settle the matter.

Staying with Gordon is his girl, Gloria Blondell, and ex-pug, Hal Baylor. Baylor is sort of a bodyguard, driver type.

Russell has a talk with Gordon about his upcoming testimony. Gordon is now a tad reluctant to go on after the attempted hit. Thorson calls his boss, Captain of Detectives, Robert Taylor. Taylor pays a call and tells Gordon that they will assign a Detective to stay with Gordon to guard him.

Detective Tige Andrews draws the short straw and is soon at the apartment. Gordon is not all that happy with the deal and is rather rude to Tige. Gordon's girl, Blondell turns out to be something of a lush which does not help matters. Then there is Gordon's bit on the side, Mari Lynn, who keeps calling to talk to Gordon.

The next day, Baylor steps out to grab the morning paper from the corner store. Killer Lambert and several of his goons grab him up and drag him into a van. 20 minutes later, they drive by Gordon's apartment and fire the severely beaten Baylor onto the front lawn. Baylor is soon found and brought into the apartment. Baylor has a message from Lambert, "get ready to start pushing daisies!" The Police now add a few more Detectives to the detail to protect Gordon. Gordon is now adamant that he will not testify unless the Police can capture Lambert.

The boys in blue soon come up with a plan. Gordon and Tige are both very similar in size and features. They stake out the home of Gordon's bit on the side, Mari Lynn. They then wait till dark and send Tige, in Gordon's suit, out to meet her. Sure enough, the mob types show with Mister Lambert in the lead.

Lambert comes through the back door of Lynn's place to find a dark apartment. Tige steps out of the shadows and calls on him to surrender. Of course the reply is several ounces of lead. Tige and Lambert are both wounded in the exchange. Lambert bolts out the front door where several more Detectives are waiting with guns drawn. Again, Lambert refuses to surrender, and rounds are again exchanged, with Lambert gaining several more ounces in weight before expiring.

Everything goes smooth at the courthouse and Gordon's testimony is the nail in the mobster's coffin.

They sure can pack a fair amount of story into these half hour episodes.

Gloria Blondell was the younger sister of long time Warner's star, Joan Blondell. She was best known as "Honeybee Gillis" on the William Bendix series, THE LIFE OF RILEY.

Bruce Gordon made a living out of playing thugs and bad men. He is probably best known for playing Frank Nitti in the "UNTOUCHABLES" television series.

Jack Lambert was of course known as one of Hollywood's best heavies. The downright evil looking Lambert had roles in many television series. Some of his better known films would include the film noir, 99 RIVER STREET, THE KILLERS, THE UNSUSPECTED, FORCE OF EVIL, THE GREAT GATSBY, THE ENFORCER and BORDER INCIDENT.
