THE DETECTIVES – An Eye for an Eye – 1961

This one is episode 55 from the 97 episode run of, THE DETECTIVES. This series starred Robert Taylor and ran between 1959 and 1962. The first two seasons ran at a half hour and the last season had a runtime of an hour. The series followed the detective squad in a big city precinct. Cast regulars included, Mark Goddard, Russell Thorson, Tige Andrews, Lee Farr and Adam West. Robert Taylor headlines as Police Captain, Matt Holbrook.

Detective Mark Goddard is feeling a bit under the weather and visits the Police doctor. They do a few tests and tell him to take the weekend off. They will contact him the next day with the test results. Goddard drives home planning to spend a quiet weekend reading and catching up on his sleep. He pulls up and parks at his house.

A man, Eduardo Ciannelli, is loading up a large box onto the back of a truck. He asks Goddard to give him a hand. Goddard steps up to help. Ciannell pulls a sap out and gives the Detective a belt behind the ear, rendering him out like a light. Before he dives off with Goddard, Ciannelli writes, "An Eye for an Eye" on the hood of Goddard's car.

When Goddard comes to, he is shackled in a cage located in an old barn. Goddard asks what the hell is going on. Ciannelli tells him he is getting even for Goddard locking up his son. The son, a mid-level numbers racket man, has been busted by Goddard several times. He is doing a bit in prison at the moment.

Goddard attempts to talk the old guy into releasing him, Ciannelli shakes his head in the negative. Goddard is feeling really rough as he is now getting sharp pains in his side. The reason for the pain is that he is about to have his appendix burst.

Meanwhile, back at the Detective squad, the Police doctor is trying to reach Goddard. The tests show that Goddard and his appendix are about to become enemies. Detectives Russell Thorson and Tige Andrews hit Goddard's place in case he is too sick to answer his phone. They find the message on the car and quickly decide something nasty is going on. They quickly hunt down cases Goddard had been involved with.

They pay a visit to several people including Ciannelli's daughter, Arlene Martel. Martel soon has the boys heading for the small farm her father has out of town.

Ciannelli greets the Detectives with a rifle and swears to take them all with him. The daughter, Martell steps up and tells her father that her brother, his son, is a low life crook who does not deserve to be helped. The father, Ciannelli, knows this is true, but he needed to hear it. He surrenders the rifle and himself.

Goddard is loaded up and whisked off to a hospital in time to save him. This is again a nicely constructed episode, of a series that is fast becoming a favourite with me.

Of note here is the director, James Clavell. Writer, producer and director Clavell is best known as the man behind, SHOGUN. He wrote the novel, story or screenplay for, SHOGUN, THE FLY, FIVE GATES TO HELL, 633 SQAUDRON, THE GREAT ESCAPE, THE LAST VALLEY, TO SIR WITH LOVE, KING RAT, TAI-PAN and THE Satan BUG. He directed, TO SIR WITH LOVE, THE LAST VALLEY and FIVE GATES TO HELL.

Of note to fans of STAR TREK, Miss Martell was the actress who played the wife "T Pring", of Mr. Spock in the famous, AMOK TIME episode.
