A drunken rich girl runs a red light and hits a little boy on a Friday evening. The girl's attitude is that she is not responsible - it was just an accident. The boy's spleen was damaged in the accident and he is bleeding internally but his parents will not allow him to be operated on due to their religious convictions. After spending most of the weekend searching for a judge, the Prestons finally obtain a court order allowing an operation but the boy dies. When the girl finally realizes what she has done, she tries to commit suicide by jumping off the ledge outside of her apartment but the elder Preston talks her out of it. At the girl's trial for manslaughter, it is revealed that the boy's father lifted him out of his hospital bed in order to kneel and pray despite the boy's serious internal injuries. The judge rules that the manslaughter charge must be dismissed due to the father's actions which constituted a possible unforeseen cause of the boy's death. The most that the girl can be charged with is reckless driving with a maximum penalty of incarceration for eight months.
