- TriviaThis edition of Dear John was watched by 13.19 million viewers.
There is some conflict as to the chart position it attained, due to the way the ratings from BARB were presented. The Stage had it ranked Joint eighth in the UK TV charts, tied with ITV's broadcast of Reunion at Fairborough (1985).
However, Broadcast Magazine, which didn't round up figures, had Reunion at Fairborough slightly ahead with 13.2 million viewers. Yet Broadcast also compiled programmes with more than one edition in a week (such as Coronation Street and Wish You Were Here) into a weekly average, meaning they listed Dear John in 5th place.
Featured review
Sad and funny in equal measures.
Sunday has come around again, and John gets his day with Toby, with everything shut, it just leaves the zoo. John and the rest of the 1-2-1 club, are invited to a party held by member, Mrs Boyd Peters, who has a little problem.
It just gets better and better, the combination of sad and funny is flawless, it's something that today's writers just don't get, the two sides of the same coin perfectly make up the whole.
Lots of funny moments, including Mrs Arnott's alarm and Kirk's 'taking one for the team,' there are also those moments that get you frustrated, including John dealing with his awful ex wife, and her awful new lover.
Why on Earth did he get with Wendy? She's awful, what a horrid woman, she and Mike seem well suited.
Amazing to think that Toby was played by Ralph's real life son, Will Bates, what a nice memory to have and cherish.
8/10.
