The rope that Gabe Cooper was carrying over his shoulder during the trip was shorter than the rope used to scale up the side of the mountain. The scaling rope also had knots tied in it, to use as hand grips. The rope on Gabe's shoulder had no such knots, which would also require a much longer rope.
