Larry Hagman: J.R. Ewing

Quotes

  • Mandy Winger : What do you want?

    J.R. Ewing : I just wanna talk.

Mandy Winger : I don't think we have anything left to talk about.

J.R. Ewing : Oh, I think we do.

[with a smile, hands over single yellow rose]

    J.R. Ewing : A little peace offering.

    [she accepts]

J.R. Ewing : You have something boiling over on the stove?

  • Mandy Winger : [back from the kitchen]  I guess you may as well come in for a minute.

J.R. Ewing : [closes door behind him]  Do you know why I brought you that single rose tonight?

    [she shakes her head]

J.R. Ewing : Well, it's a symbol of... the new me. I know when we first met, I came on... too fast, too strong. I guess I tried to dazzle you with my... money and my possessions. I suppose I... I tried to impress you right into my bed.

Mandy Winger : [with a smile]  You were a little... overpowering.

J.R. Ewing : Yes, I was too sure of myself. But I found in the past that... well, power and money are a mighty aphrodisiac to a lot of women. But you're a special person. And there's another side of me, a side I'd really like you to see.

Mandy Winger : Why? Why me? You're married. It may not mean much to you, but wouldn't you be much better off with someone who just wanted fun and games?

J.R. Ewing : [little smirk]  Most likely. I've always liked that in the past. But I'm going through a very critical point in my life. And I'm engaged in a battle I might lose. I've lost before, but never on this scale. And never to Cliff Barnes.

Mandy Winger : Your fight for Ewing Oil has *nothing* to do with me, and I really don't wanna get involved.

    [shakes her head]

J.R. Ewing : You're right, you're right. I find that... when I should be concentrating on ways to stop Barnes... I'm thinking about you. Well, what I'm saying is, I'd like to see you, be with you, spend some time with you.

    Mandy Winger : J.R., please...

J.R. Ewing : Not as lovers. No. I wanna start all over again. Get to know each other. And I promise I won't push you, I won't try to overwhelm you again.

Mandy Winger : [with wry smile]  Could you really accept conditions like that?

    J.R. Ewing : I'll try.

Mandy Winger : All right. I'll see you.

    [he looks relieved]

Mandy Winger : But not tonight.

    [shakes her head]

    Mandy Winger : Call me.

    J.R. Ewing : All right.

    [opens door to leave]

J.R. Ewing : You know, I wonder if I wouldn't be a hell of a lot better off if I never met you, Mandy Winger.

  • Marilee Stone : Speaking of working together, Cliff, as I remember, last time we met, you seemed rather cool. You left me by the pool all by myself.

Cliff Barnes : Things change, Marilee. I may have acted a little bit hasty, but there's nothing I'd like better than a good business relationship with you.

Jordan Lee : Cliff, you know I'd like to work with you, but I don't intend to get mixed up in any vendetta with J.R.

Cliff Barnes : You don't have to worry about that, Jordan. J.R. knows he's gonna lose his company to me.

    [chuckles]

Cliff Barnes : He's running around with his tail between his legs.

waitress : Have you made your choice, Mr. Barnes?

    Cliff Barnes : Uh... Champagne.

    [to Jamie]

Cliff Barnes : Would you like champagne?

Jamie Ewing : Well, I don't know. I haven't had much of it.

Cliff Barnes : [to the waitress]  Two. Two bottles of the very best. Nothing but the best for my sweet little partner.

waitress : Yes, sir, two bottles.

    [off on her way]

Marilee Stone : You must be awfully sure of winning this fight with J.R.

    [Cliff chuckles happily]

Mandy Winger : [two more guests arrive at the club]  Oh, J.R., are you sure you're doing the right thing?

J.R. Ewing : I'm fine with it if you are.

Mandy Winger : There's bound to be people here you know who will tell your wife.

J.R. Ewing : Mandy, you made it perfectly clear that you did not want a little backstreet romance, so I decided not to take you to the out-of-the-way places. Besides somebody who really knows you, you could be the most beautiful independent oil woman in Oklahoma.

  • J.R. Ewing : [to Mandy, as they enter the restaurant and he steers her towards his archenemy:]  Well, the best defense is a good offense. Come on.

    [to the group:]

J.R. Ewing : Well, looky here. Birds of a feather. Plotting an assassination, are you? Or trying to figure out a way of stealing somebody else's company?

Jordan Lee : You got no call to talk that way, J.R.

J.R. Ewing : Really? Well, Marilee, I see you and Jamie made up. Planning a little midnight swim later?

Cliff Barnes : [glowering]  Shut up, J.R.!

J.R. Ewing : Jamie, you sure found yourself a prize.

Jamie Ewing : I'm sure I prefer it to yours.

J.R. Ewing : Oh, really? You know what they say. Losers tend to flock together.

Cliff Barnes : Ah-hah! Like the little lady you're with, huh?

    Mandy Winger : [shocked]  Cliff...!

Cliff Barnes : Oh, I heard you're such a big spender, J.R. Tell me, how much did it cost to have her throw me over?

J.R. Ewing : Oh, that was for free. All she had to do was hang around with you for a while.

Cliff Barnes : Oh, is that so? Well, you're welcome to her. Considering the number of nights she spent at my place, you can have my leftovers.

Mandy Winger : [furious]  You miserable worm!

[slaps Cliff through the face - hard!]

Cliff Barnes : [laughs]  Well, you'll find out how much better off you were with me than with what you got there!

    [and then J.R. decks him]
