Synopsis

  • Mike Torrello returns from vacation to learn that not only is he to be indicted along with the Chicago Outfit, but that Ray Luca will defend himself by summoning Torrello as a defense witness to demonstrate the unreliability of star prosecution witness Frank Holman. David Abrams, horrified that he unwittingly imperiled Torrello by giving Luca the strategy that Everett Steele now follows, resigns from the public defender & works for Mike pro bono, gaining Torrello the right to be tried after the Outfit. For his part, Luca worries that Abrams has now turned firmly against him & decides that the assassination of both Torrello & Abrams is opportune, since Torrello's position as Luca's defense witness gives Ray an alibi. Manny Weisbord's selection of big-shot lawyer Stephen Kordo to the Midwest Employees Pension board, with a plan to take over gambling & hotels in Las Vegas, is blocked by Dominic Tranchita's ambition to invest heavily in the narcotics trade. Manny is dismayed when Phil Bartoli switches his support to Tranchita and, in a rage, threatens the Council with destruction if its members refuse to back his Vegas plan. Mike once again sacrifices his personal life for his career when he breaks up with Inger to spare her the ordeal of his trial. David's father, the retired bookie known as the Dancer, comes to court to watch his son work. Luca's far-sighted planning to protect himself leads to tragedy.
