Tom's lawyer has pointed out to him that Eddie doesn't have a clear guardian if something happened to Tom. Tom invites the only logical choice- his mother (Martha Scott, "The Bob Newhart Show", "Dallas", "Ben Hur") over to spend the weekend. Living in San Fransisco, she rarely visits and Tom hopes she and Eddie can get to know one another better without telling either the reason. Free-thinking Norman also comes to dinner. She's rather critical in her assessments, which Eddie finds deflating. When Tom decides upon a suitable guardian with Mrs. Livingston, the sage housekeeper reasons a choice not being considered.
