The director's credit "Alan Smithee" is historically used in the entertainment industry when a director wants to disown a project. An option available from 1968 till its discontinuation in 2000, the credit could only be used after the director or directors proved to the satisfaction of the Directors Guild of America that the project had been substantially outside the control of the director(s) and therefore did not legitimately represent the work of that director(s).
