Not A Classic, But Solid

Warning: Spoilers
I saw Didn't You Kill My Brother when it was originally transmitted in 1988, and being a big Comic Strip Presents fan I found it underwhelming. Watching it again almost 30 years years later I found it much more enjoyable. Maybe the first time around I wasn't mature enough and didn't care enough to understand the nuances of the story.

The story is quite straightforward. Alexei Sayle plays twin brothers, East End gangsters modeled on The Kray Twins. When one of the twins (Carl) is sent down for 30 years he impresses the parole board after studying and achieving an insane amount of A-levels and degrees and becoming a model prisoner. His ambitious Parole Officer (a hilarious Pauline Melville) moves him into her home with dreams of appearing on chat shows and reaping the rewards for rehabilitating Carl. Meanwhile Carl's gangster twin Sterling has a lucrative business selling stolen bicycles, which the local kids acquire for him. Carl steers the kids away from crime and they help him start a business building bicycles instead. Sterling isn't pleased and a showdown ensues.

The underlying theme is Capitalism verses Socialism, and the Thatcher Governments' destruction of industry in the United Kingdom. It's not entirely successful but certainly has its moments, with the magnificent Beryl Reid playing Carl and Sterling's psychopathic Mum a highlight. It also has a couple of musical numbers which are handled well, and has aged better than some other episodes. It also has a fleeting appearance by a very young Eddie Marsan, which was cool.

Alexie's magnum opus

Warning: Spoilers
You either love him or hate him I guess judging by the other reviews.

Back in the 80s I was teenager and didn't particularly appreciate his style of humour then. Not being from the UK I didn't even discover the Comic Strip until I went there in '89 and saw a few which I loved, particularly Fistful of Travellers Cheques but had not seen this one until just today. I think it's aged very well and the humour is particularly clever with the story being an obvious reference to the Krays and Sayle's own mild hit song.

I think it's aged well because this style of wit doesn't really exist anymore, much to our detriment. It's not necessarily always laugh out loud funny though it does have some of those moments too. It's more of an appreciation for the written word and the twist of phrase. A lot of work went into this script and I enjoyed Bob Spiers direction. It's constantly moving.

Found the subtitled scenes very funny. And the classroom speech. With shotgun of course. (Sawed off at the right end).

Enjoyed seen Brian Croucher from Blake 7, Beryl Reid who had been in Doctor Who a few years earlier and had admitted not to understanding the material but enjoyed working on the show anyway and Peter Richardson, who, towards the end throws the young girl out of camera shot from nowhere that had me in stitches.

I really loved it. It provides a break too from the style of the other member's usual antics, some episodes of which, haven't aged well at all.

Bloody good show Mr Sayles. Both of you.

Disappointing

The title and story of this episode are from one of Alexei Sayle's oldest and dumbest jokes. It wasn't even a joke, it was just a random stupid thing he would say and somehow it was funny. Not surprisingly, it doesn't work as an hour long comedy. Some people didn't like that Sayle's stand-up,Young Ones appearances and his own TV shows were just him doing the same insane character with a Cockney accent. Those people haven't seen him on The Comic Strip Presents. For some reason when they let him write an episode of this show he makes the lead character so boring that it almost makes me hate him. While this episode had some great subtle jokes(like him being an unstructured activities coordinator)the plot is very thin. Some people would say I didn't get the humor but they are wrong.I got it, it's just not funny.
