Two Girls for Every Boyd (#8.9)

Warning: Spoilers
Woody finally gets a role in a play. It is a love story and he has trouble acting like he is in love. His co actress tries everything to make him be able to do it. And when they practice kissing Kelly comes in who gets mad that Woody is in a play and didn't tell her. And here they discover how he can act in love on stage, by pretending he talks to Kelly.

The beard story is so much better than the main story. It had a few laughs, mainly because it was fun to see the cast with facial hair.

The highlight of the main story for me was to see Lisa Kudrow! This was even before Friends so it was fun to see. And she already did a cute little Phoebe like hand movement in one of the scenes.

Warning: Spoilers
Woody Boyd finally gets the lead in a play, but he has to hide it from his girlfriend Kelly because he fears she won't understand. Lisa Kudrow- who would later become famous for being unfunny on FRIENDS- is unfunny here as Woody's co-star and erstwhile mistress.

Meanwhile the gang takes part in a beard-growing contest, a B-story that's much less funny than it sounds. Pete Schriener- yuppie pervert and Cheers extra- gets a big line of dialogue here that surely extended his SAG benefits for another six months. This is the first time Kelsey Grammar grew a beard during his run on Cheers, and I get the feeling that the beard storyline was written after Kels expressed his intention to producers to grow his own.

Back in the main story Woody's acting skills leave a lot to be desired... but the scenes of him struggling with the role are not exactly hilarious. Emily hits on Woody- kind of- and you get the idea that the writers muted and dulled this aspect of the story after extensive re-writes. Does Woody really believe that Kelly couldn't handle him acting in a play? Does Emily really want Woody or is it just a half-hearted pass, a cowardly attempt at a cheating storyline?

No one knows, not even yours truly, who has seen the episode so many times I can do it by heart. Good laughs throughout, and I'm not here to nitpick.

Acting and Facial Hair

Woody gets one of the leads in "Our Town." Unfortunately, he has a terrible time with a romantic scene. At the same time, Sam, Cliff, Frasier, and Norm do a beard growing contest. It gets a little crazy but eventually Woody comes around. Cliff has a funny final scene.
