- TriviaPrior to the role of Dawn being cast, Sarah Michelle Gellar suggested they take a look at Michelle Trachtenberg. Dawn was originally conceived to be 12 years old, but after Trachtenberg was cast, the writers raised the character's age to 14. However, the first few scripts were still written in the voice of a 12-year-old. Before being cast, Trachtenberg, a fan of the show, had written a letter to Real Me (2000) that suggested how she could become a character on Buffy. The character of Dawn was also originally intended to have the power to speak to the dead, or to be able to move objects with her mind. These powers were later dropped.
- GoofsAt the beginning, Buffy and Giles are training in a room, which is later shown to be the back room of the magic shop, however at this point Giles doesn't own the shop, so it doesn't make sense that they would have been training there at that time.
- Quotes
Dawn Summers: [thinking] She and Willow are both witches. They do spells and stuff, which is so much cooler than slaying. I told Mom one time I wish they'd teach me some of the things they do together, and-and then she got really quiet and made me go upstairs.

It's a fun episode! Don't let confusion cloud your judgement
After what I found to be a boring, uneventful and inconsistent season premiere, it was refreshing to watch this episode as it reminded me of the witty, cheerful and ridiculous show I fell in love with. Between the return of Harmony along with her "gang", Giles' fascination with and consequential ownership of the magic shop, and a classic voiceover by the sudden appearance of Buffy's apparent little sister, this second episode always hypes me up for what's to come. While I am a re-watcher of the series, I confidently recall that I enjoyed this episode even the first time around. What can I say, I love being confused.
Accordingly, I'm always astonished when I read other peoples' reaction to Dawn and this episode as a whole; they sound almost as whiny and annoying as the character herself. Calm down, and trust the process. Understand that the writers meant to make Dawn just as frustrating as she is; it's not "bad character writing" as several other reviews deem it to be. In fact, I think the poor ratings of this episode only confirms just how well of a job the writers did.
In summary: Not a favorite by any means, but I like this episode! Remember, patience is key.
