Buck, Wilma and Hawk are searching for "rubidium crystals". Rubidium is a real element, but neither red nor crystalline. It is a soft, white metal.
Hawk says the place is covered with volcanic ash but there isn't any on the trees.

At one point, Admiral Asimov is addressed as "General Asimov" by a member of the crew.
In a more-annoying-than-normal fashion, Buck is clearly in charge of the landing party, barking order at everyone, including Wilma, who is a Colonel while Buck is only a Captain.
