- Mary Brown, a writer, hires Bronco to guide her to the ghost town Basin City. It is at a high altitude near an abandoned gold mine and a glacier. Upon arrival she vows to stay as they are greeted by a man who acts as if he owns the city - because he says he bought it. He goes by the name John Smith and tells them to take the building he normally stays in since it is safer with a strong door. A third man arrives toting a large fancy rifle going by the name James Jones saying he is there to "fish". That night they hear a ruckus outside and find an old grizzled man hitting Jones on the head with his pistol. Smith knows the man known as Pancake and stops him. Pancake thought Jones who was peeping through the slats on the window was spying on Smith. Later, Pancake tells Smith that he is going to keep an eye on the horses that night but the next morning the animals are gone with Pancake saying he fell asleep. Mary serves breakfast to everyone as Pancake tells what he knows but no one trusts each other. With no horses Bronco must see it through.—Anonymous
