- Marcia wants to nominate Mike for "Father of the Year." But she wants to keep it a secret, which means she'll have to break family rules to get it done. If she's caught, Mike will punish her--which is exactly what happens.
- Making his other meeting attendees wait for a few minutes while he helps her with her homework is just the latest reason why Marcia believes Mike is such a special father, despite he not being her biological father. So when Marcia learns that the Daily Chronicle newspaper is a holding a Father of the Year essay writing contest, Marcia has no hesitation in preparing an entry, but she doesn't want to let anyone, especially Mike, know. Even when she is punished by him, especially for something she knows was her fault, she understands. But when she continually gets in trouble for writing the essay, the reason which she can't tell him, she gets punished more severely with each successive incident. The final straw on both sides is when Marcia is caught out after hours to mail the letter to meet the contest deadline, in addition to sneaking in and out through her bedroom window. Her punishment: being grounded, which includes her not being able to go on an already planning family ski weekend, skiing which is her favorite activity. But if Mike and Carol knew the details of Marcia's secret activities, especially if Marcia's essay wins, would they change their minds about the punishment?—Huggo
