"That dang blue stuff"

Warning: Spoilers
This Bonanza episode done in flashback tells the story of the founding of the Comstock Lode and the boom town of Virginia City. Once a booming metropolis Virginia City now exists with a skeleton population and just exists for the tourist trade. And it is nothing like you see on Bonanza.

As Jack Carson portrays him Comstock was an itinerant conman and we know little about him. Which for the purposes of this show is good because his story can be woven right into that of the fictional Cartwrights. He did in fact sell his interest in a claim in an alleged gold strike where silver was in abundance. "That dang blue stuff" as the episode refers to it as.

I always enjoy Jack Carson in whatever he does, drama or comedy, big screen or small. You will too.

Not too good

Sorry, but I didn't really care for this episode. I did like the part where Little Joe takes an Indian as a date and gets into some trouble. I also liked the part where they were talking about the forest and trees. The whole story about Mr. Comstock though...actually, I was a bit lost and confused as to what was really going on.

This is a flashback episode where they are remembering back. I'm assuming Joe is younger than his 18 years and was still young enough to be taken to the woodshed since his father declared he'd be punished if he needed punishing.

This episode is a light (one was needed after that last one), and usually I like those but this one just didn't do anything for me!

One of the absolute worst episodes

The only Bonanza episode worse than this one is the one where Hoss is goaded into trying to fly off of a mountain called "The Ponderosa Birdman", Even the ones about the leprechauns or the rabbits were miles better. I started watching Bonanza as a kid when it first came to TV and have always been a fan and had always had some degree of puzzlement why Pernel Roberts left the show,. But if there are more episodes as poor as this one, I finally understand why he left.

This episode is very jarring. All the talk about fat women, Adam shoots an Indian in the hand and he acts like it doesn't even hurt. One of the Cartwright sons shoots a canteen on a horse, water starts pouring out but the bullet magically stops after it penetrates the front side and doesn't hurt the horse. Bad episode that has a very weak story line. Will not waste any more of my time by describing this episode.
