"Fish" offers us the only glimpse of Fish and Bernice in their apartment, but is far more noteworthy for introducing Steve Landesberg, previously seen in "Doomsday," as Det. Arthur Dietrich, a new transfer from the now defunct 33rd precinct, who appeared sporadically until Abe Vigoda's spin off series. Fish is despondent about being placed on restricted duty, choosing to go home for lunch rather than return to the squad room. Doris Belack replaces Florence Stanley for this third appearance from Bernice (next seen in "The Recluse"), who knows something's wrong because her husband has come home for lunch three times since Roosevelt died! We meet Fish daughter Beverly (Emily Levine, never seen again), walking in only one shoe to keep her hips level (Dietrich: "she handles that well, doesn't she?"). Bernice habitually brings Dietrich one glass of water after another, and he also makes an impression on Beverly- with his impression of Gregory Peck! Bernice confesses that when her husband goes out to feed the pigeons, he's actually buying day-old bread and hitting them with it (Dietrich: "nice shot!"). It would be nearly a year before Dietrich made his second appearance in "Bus Stop."
