Update: With flight time from Los Angeles to Mexico City of four to five hours, the trip to Mexico City would have taken all day. If he had just arrived back from Mexico City to drive out to the farm in the afternoon, the trip to Mexico City was probably an overnight trip. During that period, it is entirely possible that Jay traded cars - to get a clean one from the rental company (the car is certainly a rental).

The Boston cardinal indicated that the cross that was stolen is supposed to contain a sliver of the cross on which Jesus was crucified. Any crucifix with that legacy would have showcased such a relic. There is no place in the cross that was stolen where the sliver would or could be located.

They are delivering the cross from Mexico to the archdiocese of Los Angeles. A sign says that Live Oak, the town near the rendezvous point, is near US 101. US 101 starts in Los Angeles and goes north, away from Mexico.
