Avril Burke is at her wits end as to what to do with her horse, The Cat. She had hoped to race her but is proving to be something of a dud at the track. She can't sell her for a decent price either, as the horse's reputation is now well known. Things take a change for the better when, strangely, the horse seems to take a liking to Grainne Dooley's new pet goat, a birthday gift, which she has named Daddy G. No one can explain it, but the horse clearly performs better when Daddy G is around. Which of course leads to a bit of skulduggery on the part of some of the locals. Father Sheahan meanwhile faces a dilemma when a man confesses to having beaten a woman, now comatose in hospital. The police suspect the woman's husband of having beaten her and may arrest him. Father Sheahan however cannot reveal anything he's heard in confession.
