Gualtiero Muratore, a retired business-gentleman and amateur painter, is found frozen to death inside Jan Hogenbos's Amsterdam meat locker. Because of his Italian extraction Vledder suggests a mob crime. De Ccck rather searches a link with a firm employee, notably Italian ex-con Giovanni de Rivera. Surprisingly, more links are found, also outside the firm, referring back to concentration camp Dachau.
