After the great episode Motherboy XXX, Arrested Development comes back with another classic- The Immaculate Election, in which George Michael runs for student president. Of course, he loses by a landslide- this show usually aims to make you feel sorry for losers, and this episode is no exception. But the show, in addition to making you feel sympathy, mainly aims to make you laugh. It succeeds here, given George Michael's campaign video, which is funny because it's so embarrassing. It includes George Michael acting out scenes from Star Wars, which will hopefully stay funny for its lameness, even if future viewers don't get that it's a reference to an actual video of a "Star Wars kid." The Star Wars video also ties in with Buster's recent loss of a hand, since George Michael acts out losing a hand (probably inspired by The Empire Strikes Back where Luke loses his hand). It's a complex, smart reference. Speaking of the hand loss story, this episode explores more of the tragedy as Buster and Lucille try to cope. Feeling sorry for Buster, the housekeeper goes to bed with him. Between this, sexual references involving Ann, Tobias on a fake toilet, Buster being alone with the robot, and an incestuous dustbuster joke, this is one of the dirtier episodes of AD. (Ironically though, I heard this got a more family-friendly rating than most AD episodes).
Other highlights include GOB's magic provoking an angry reaction from a security guard, and the line "I don't know why, but that's it" being said twice, once when Lindsay throws out Tobias and once when Michael throws out GOB. The result- this episode is a candidate for being one of the highlights of season 2, but then, there's a lot of other candidates.
