- When local farmer Rafe Hollister refuses to take his tetanus shot, Andy and Barney try to convince him he should.
- Andy agrees to help the pretty new county nurse, Mary Simpson, talk farmer Rafe Hollister into taking his tetanus shot. Rafe is a hard working man who, he says, has never been sick and has never had to see a doctor. Mary had promised her bosses that she would have a 100% success rate in inoculations, so getting Rafe on board is important to her. It's important for Andy as well as he quite likes Mary and would like to see more of her. They do finally get Rafe on board, but in reviewing her list, she realizes that there is one other individual who hasn't had his shot yet: Barney!—garykmcd
- Andy agrees to help out Mary Simpson, the county nurse who promised her superiors that she would have a 100% success rate in inoculations among the farmers in the area. Andy and Barney let her know that at least one, Rafe Hollister, is going to be a struggle since he refuses all manner of medical help. This is a bigger problem because Rafe is a person of influence among the farmers in the county. Andy drives her up to his farm and tries a reasoning technique by showing Rafe some of the instruments of modern medicine. Rafe stubbornly insists that he can get along just fine without medical help, and when Mary tries to give him a tetanus shot, he angrily refuses and dismisses Andy and Mary. Back at the office, Barney insists that Andy's approach didn't work because he was too soft, that in order to get Rafe to take his shot, Rafe needs to be treated like a child. His approach doesn't work, and he and Mary are run off the farm when Rafe starts shooting. Andy goes back to Rafe's farm and arrests him for shooting at Mary. He brings him back to the courthouse and jails him where he tries a different technique, reasoning that since he won't take the shot he'll be admired in the future as a hero. He lays out a vivid mental picture of what will happen when he dies probably from a farming accident (especially the suffering part) and how the county will carry on during his funeral. Scared straight, Rafe decides that the shot is not such a bad idea and even agrees to help Mary and Andy get shots for all the farmers in the area. Mary is happy to finally get his cooperation, and discovers in her records that Barney hasn't had his shot either. Barney is reluctant and unsuccessfully tries to fight it.—J.
