Expensive!
parkave-235341 February 2021
Helen is fairly accurate when she says that 4 yrs. of college would cost about $15,000. I got out of college in 1973 and my last year cost $2900.00. Also, I always enjoy Ken Lynch!

Andy's Laundromat
Hitchcoc8 January 2020
Suddenly, Andy begins to worry about Opie's future, namely, how he can afford to send him to college. Opie has no concept himself but Helen delivers the crushing blow about how expensive it is (of course, by today's standards, it seems a pittance). So Andy needs more income and franchises a coin laundry, thinking that it will bring in lots of money with little effort. The old phrase, "If it seems to be too good to be true it probably is" applies here.

A little current-day perspective is in order...

I think that the viewer needs to keep in mind that this episode was written and shot back in 1967. And that, according to my handy-dandy Inflation Calculator, $15,000 back then is now equivalent to $126,264.07 today (2022)...

College loans or grants?

I always wondered why there was no mention of applying for loans or grants to help out with the costs of college.

Boola Boola

Much worse than I remember. A few laughs with Howard (Jack Dodson) getting his college mocked by Emmett (Paul Hartman) with some funny digs. All Mayberry seems brain dead when it comes to washing machines in a laundromat. Even veteran housekeeper Aunt Bee is baffled by the proper soap amount.

Funny appearance by Jesslyn Fax (Mrs Le Grande). Always fun to see Maudie Prickett here as Mrs Larch. Andy can't remember his Aunt Nora? Usually cantankerous Andy adversary Ken Lynch is much more pleasant. Mostly the episode was flat. Really heavy on the stress and anxiety of future college tuition was too cumbersome for any comedy to flow. Again the town is tolerant of Andy's time away from the job on personal business. But he is on constant call to offset it.
