Beka revisits her childhood
Tweekums19 August 2018
As this episode opens three Wayists are being transported aboard the Maru... except they aren't actually Wayists. Two of them turn on the third demanding he hand over a certain item; they are defeated but not before their victim is fatally wounded. Before he dies we learn that he is Wezlow, a Collector and had worked aboard the Maru when Beka was a child... He makes it clear that she has something that The Abyss fears; but what she doesn't know. An item he was carrying leads the crew of the Andromeda to the Collector's secret archive. Here they access the last file Wezlow had looked at. It is a recording made aboard the Maru when Beka was still a child. While they are investigating the recordings an agent of The Abyss arrives intent on finding what they are looking for first.

This was a pretty solid episode. It starts well with the apparent Wayists fighting then gets intriguing when we learn one of them is actually a collector linked to Beka's past. The way the archives are experienced rather than just read was fun even if some of the details were a little cliché; most notably the fact that injuries sustained are real. At first I was unsure about the way a scene from Beka's early life was in the archive at all but it makes sense given that Wezlow gave her something important and, as a collector, could have placed the recording in the archive. It was nice to see that there are 'True Collectors' as well as the corrupted individuals introduced previously. The story provided a good sense of threat and some solid action... it also provided some genuine laughs as Harper accesses a fictionalised drama about Andromeda and her crew... deliberately cheesy and badly acted! Overall a fun episode that balanced drama, action and mild comedy nicely.
