Inspector Alleyn makes a reference to "the Stern Gang" - an illegal far-right terrorist organization founded well before World War II and dedicated to driving the British out of Palestine. It was also called the "Lehi" and committed many murderous atrocities, including the assassination of a British minister, Lord Moyne.
The un-named Prime Minister is quite clearly meant to represent Clement Attlee, the Labour Prime Minister of Great Britain between 1945 and 1951.
The music heard at the beginning of this story, during the police raid, bears a strong resemblance to famous music composed by Bernard Herrmann for Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film "Psycho", although it is rather more conventionally orchestrated.
