Archie starts taking pills
gcanfield-297277 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Very emotional episode with one of Carroll O'Connor's greatest performances. Archie's bar lost Harry the bartender. Other than this, there is no explanation given, for why the bar is suddenly doing no business. Why are Archie's friends all going to a different bar? The situation seems to have been set up, just to give Archie an excuse to start abusing drugs. In any case, the cast makes it all work, despite the unanswered questions.

Pretty darn funny actually !

All I will say is that most of the later episodes were pretty crummy compared to the first few seasons. This is a very late episode but it manages to stand out,it breaks the monotony of most of the other episodes from this timeframe. If you watch this episode with a humorous attitude you cannot help but laugh, sometimes with it and sometimes at it. This is one of the funnier later episodes.

Out of character

I love AITF, but this ranks down as one of my least favorite episodes because Archie popping pills is too out of character after what we've seen of him for the previous 7 seasons. This character just wouldn't do that---Mike or Gloria? That would've worked if they wanted a pill addiction story to do...or even Edith after her attempted rape ordeal a few episodes prior. But not Archie. He was way too rigid in his ways to try pills so easily.

Horrible

I saw this when I was 26. My heart sank when he started taking the pills. My family had gone through the same thing four years earlier, before this aired and it was beyond sad. Especially when he started on his fast talk and rant at the end. Just like my Dad. Thank God my Dad got help right away. Anyway I just watched it again, I should type that I started to watch it and turned it off as soon as I saw which episode it was. I had to post a remark That acting was excellent. I guess this storyline helped many people when it aired......which is a good thing though.

Archie on drugs

Business is very slow at Archie's Place, Hank offers him some pills to help him with his depression.

Another lousy Season 8 episode. A Martinez (he was in the 1972 John Wayne movie The Cowboys )plays Archie's new helper at the bar. You know this episode was going to be bad when there is a scene of a dramatic close up of a bottle of pills Hank shows to Archie. This was like something out of a bad Movie Of The Week about addiction, not for a sitcom. The capsules are most likely pep pills though it is never revealed what they are. Archie suddenly has a burst of energy when he gets home and the family suspects he is on something. There is an uncomfortable scene where Archie talks a mile a minute and then suddenly becomes severely depressed. He finally breaks down in tears at the end, one of the worst endings for any episode of this great series. Another sign of it's downfall.
