Archie makes friends with his hospital roommate
Archie has a back problem and is worried about his job, Mike tells him it is psychosomatic.
Archie ends up in the hospital in this hilarious episode. His roommate, a Frenchman named Jean Duval, is behind a partition so they can't see each other. Archie doesn't realize he is not only French but black (Roscoe Lee Browne is great in his second appearance on the show). Louise and Lionel pay a visit and Duval thinks they are Archie's family to Lionel's amusement. The scene where Archie and Duval finally see each other is one of the biggest laughs in this one.

Roscoe Lee Browne (Jean Duval) generated a lot of laughs talking unseen to Archie. Then, their meeting is one of the series' funniest. One hilarious scene after another. Archie always lived in fear of losing his job. It wasn't the best paying job. But, payed the bills. Carroll O'Connor looks to be really packing on some weight in this episode. Another example of brilliant casting of a guest star.

Psychosomatic
When Archie is hospitalised, he befriends a fellow patient, but he is blissfully ignorant to the fact that the man he became acquitted to is black since there is a barrier between them.
In this encounter, Lionel as well as Louise pop down to see Arch first, something that I consider effective because it demonstrates that he does have friends of different ethnic backgrounds, however this does not preclude him from having made preconceived notions, which in itself is his Achilles Heel.
